Summary

Xboxcould be looking to make some adjustments to the look of its physical game boxes according to some recent game listings. AsXboxgears up for its Summer Game Fest showcase on June 9, fans are expecting to learn the release dates of Obsidian Entertainment’s fantasy RPGAvowedand MachineGames’Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.Xbox gamers are also hoping for some fun surprises. Perhaps a potential first look atPerfect Darkgameplay, or news from Xbox’sGears of Warstudio, The Coalition, could be in the cards.

WhenXbox entered its Series X generation in 2020, it made some fitting updates to its physical game boxes from the Xbox One generation. The sleeker Series X box designs did away with the plastic green strip on the top of the boxes that was home to the Xbox One’s wordmark in favor of printing the Xbox logo on the game art itself in the top left corner. This white Xbox logo on its small green background was accompanied by text denoting the exact console the game runs on, either Xbox One, Series X, or both, on top of a white or gray banner depending on the colors of each game’s cover art. Additionally, a combination of Smart Delivery, 4K, HDR, and Series X logos would populate the top right corner of the box art.

Xbox Series X offers seamless gaming experience with high-quality visuals.

Now, it seems Xbox is updating its physical box designs once again. A Limited Run GamesXbox listing forClock Tower Rewind, as well as alisting forKena: Bridge of Spirits' recently announced Xbox release, both display updated physical box designs. Here, the Xbox Series X and Xbox One text is moved to the top right of the game art with neither a white nor gray background to aid its readability, leaving the lone Xbox logo remaining in the top left corner. The logos indicating Smart Delivery, HDR, andSeries X’s 4K capabilitiesare no longer found on the face of the box.

Xbox Making Potential Changes To Physical Game Box Design

While this new updated design looks very similar to the previous iteration that rolled out in 2020, there are a couple of potential issues at play. Firstly, while the Xbox Series X and Xbox One text is fairly readable on theKenaandClock Tower Rewindboxes without backgrounds, more complex game art could create serious trouble for the readability of the text in the upper right corner. Furthermore,Kena’s golden Premium Editionband runs across the top of the box art but underneath the Xbox logo, causing a somewhat unpleasant separation ofKena’s game art.

This new potential change indicates that Xbox is still paying some mind to its physical game box designs in the middle of an industry that’s increasingly looking to go all digital.Xbox’sSenua’s Saga: Hellblade 2was recently releasedwithout a physical edition, leading many gamers who are fans of physical media to be displeased. Whether the next big upcoming Xbox games likeAvowedandIndiana Jones and the Great Circlewill have physical releases has yet to be confirmed. If they do, their physical boxes may be sporting a new look.
