There have been countless professional wrestling video games released over the years, but one title is often brought up as arguably the best ever made.WWF No Mercyon the Nintendo 64 is still considered today to be a top-tier pro wrestling video game, and it’s not uncommon at all to see it dominating on best wrestling game lists to this day. And now a new trademark by WWE has given some pro wrestling fans hope that there may be a newWWF No Mercygame (orWWE No Mercy, rather), but they should keep their expectations in check.
As spotted by Fightful, WWE has recently filed two trademarks. One of the trademarks is for the name Commander Azeez, which is possibly the ring name of the wrestler that interfered on behalf of Apollo Crews atWrestleMania 37this past weekend. The other trademark is for No Mercy, and what’s interesting about it is that WWE already has multiple trademarks registered for “No Mercy” for various uses. However, this specific trademark is to use the No Mercy name for merchandising purposes.

The trademark doesn’t say anything about aNo Mercyvideo game, but instead focuses on clothing products featuring the No Mercy name. The trademark may suggest that WWE plans on using the No Mercy name for some reason, and with the No Mercy pay-per-view having been defunct since 2017, some have jumped to the conclusion that this could have something to do with the video game. The most likely explanation is that WWE plans on bringing back the No Mercy pay-per-view this year or is simply protecting its IP by renewing the trademark, so fans shouldn’t get too excited.
While a newWWE No Mercygame may or may not ever materialize, the game’s impact is still felt in wrestling video games today. FollowingWWE 2K20’s universally negative reception, a 2K executive tried to appeal to fans by claiming that theupcomingWWE 2K22is taking inspiration fromNo Mercy. Whether or not there’s any truth to that remains to be seen, but it’s telling that the developers are aware that fans still want something likeNo Mercy.
It’s been heavily implied that the upcoming AEW video game will also be taking its cues fromWWF No Mercy. In fact,WWF No Mercydirector Hideyuki Iwashitais aiding in the development of the AEW game, so there should be plenty of similarities between it and the Nintendo 64 classic.
It’s true thatWWF No Mercyis still having an impact on the professional wrestling video games of today, apparently influencing both theAEW video gameandWWE 2K22. However, fans shouldn’t hold their breath that this trademark means thatNo Mercyitself is coming back.
