The film came out in Japan last October to unprecedented box office success. It has currently made more than $370 million worldwide. Considering the fact that the film dropped in the middle of a pandemic, its numbers are shocking. Not only did it become Japan’s biggest movie ever, it broke several other box office records along the way. In terms of worldwide gross, theGhibli classicSpirited Awayis the only anime film it hasn’t surpassed entirely yet.
TheDemon SlayerEnglish dub trailer seems to tease a dark, emotional thrill ride that features everything fans love. For instance, the fluid fight animation was a big part of what made the series a success. It’s clear that Ufotable really doubled down on that for the movie. In addition to that, the English dub of the film brought back the same voice cast from the anime series. This includes Zach Aguilar as Tanjiro and Bryce Papenbrook ofAttack on Titanfame as Inosuke. Aniplex will release the film in North America as part of a joint effort with Funimation Films.
This chapter of the story will be an important bridge between the series’s first season and whatever may follow. That alone makes it a must-watch for fans. Plus, there just aren’t very many other options for American moviegoers. This means that the film could become asurprise hit for the second time.
The domestic box office still has to slow its fall. With even major studio tentpoles likeTenetbombing, one anime film won’t be enough to do that. Also, major studios continue to push their own releases farther and farther back. For that reason, Aniplex’s hesitancy to give a specific release date is at the very least troubling. All this is to say that when North American audiences finally get a chance to watch the adventures of Tanjiro on the big screen, hopefullythe hype was worth it.
Aniplex of America will releaseDemon Slayer: Mugen Trainin North America in early 2021.
