Warhammer 40K Inquisitor Martyris a classic twin-stick shooter for up to 4 players that does a good job of replicating the feeling and atmosphere of the originalWarhammertabletop games. Arguably, the quintessentialWarhammer-style loadout in Inquisitor Martyr is the Crusader build.

This seems to reflect the style of play from old board games such asNecromundaslightly more so than either thePsyker or Assassin classes. However, there are many options to choose from and even changing the armor itself radically alters the play style.

Sentinel Armor

Overall thesentinel armoris the most practical in terms of dealing damage, avoiding enemy attacks, and effect duration of the special attack. This variant comes with a deployable turret that can be placed by holding LT and RT together whilst moving the drop point with the left stick before releasing the trigger buttons (on Xbox consoles).

The turret has over 3000 armor when it lands and apart from making a dent in most enemies on screen it also does a good job of distracting enemy fire away from the player characters, leaving them free to mop up any remaining bad guys. A close second for this slot would be thedemolition armorthat provides a highly effective missile strike with a short cooldown window.

Main Weapon Set - Grav Gun

Possibly one of the most inventivesci-fi weapons in any game, thegrav gunworks by firing bolts of raw gravity energy into targets with varying and interesting results, while also providing very high DPS. The weapon can be used as a two-handed main gun or by dual wielding two grav pistols with a slightly different combination of ‘skills’ or attacks. The main attack on the A button works almost like a rapid-fire rail gun with good damage per shot and rate of fire.

The alternate attacks on the grav gun showcase the brilliant creativity of the developers of Warhammer 40K Inquisitor as they manipulate gravity in various ways to help the player and their allies. The RT attack slows and crushes opponents to the ground as their gravity is increased, eventually crushing weaker enemies to dust with aGravity Well. Other attacks include agravity vortexthat suspends targets in the air in a spinning tornado of gravitic forces, ripping them apart and having the added pleasing effect of pulling down all the tiles off the ceiling. It’s also useful for destroying cover as it has bonus damage against any fixed structures.

As mentioned, dual wielding twograv pistolsonWarhammer 40K Inquisitorprovides slightly different attack options, and one of the unique moves with this setup is the user can essentially fire the grav pistols at themselves with the B button, increasing their own gravity and knocking enemies backward and into the ground as if they have been hit by a steam train. It’s great to use almostas a melee attackto get out of situations in an emergency when surrounded by enemies.

The Grav Gun onWarhammer Inquisitoris perhaps one of their best ideas and is also practical with high damage per shot and damage per second overall. The gravity well and vortex moves also hold enemies in an area, making life easier for any co-op players in the lobby.

There are several good options for the main heavy weapon slot. Other great alternatives include theheavy bolterandheavy flamer. Both have good DPS and attacks that combine with movement meaning the player automatically backs up as they fire the Y button, for example.

With few options to move and fire simultaneously onWarhammer 40k Inquisitor Martyr, these provide a good method of doing a staged retreat as the player is dragged backward whilst firing off the attack.

Backup Weapon Set - Main Hand Power Axe/Off-Hand Autopistol

Pressing right on the directional pad switches to a completely different loadout onWarhammer Inquisitor. The most useful strategy here is to have an emergency ‘get out of jail’ loadout that can be switched to either when the grav-gun/flamer overheats and is temporarily inoperable, or when players find themselves in a situation where they are surrounded by enemies and their primary weapon is becoming less effective.

A good emergency combination to get out of most situations onWarhammer Inquisitoris the oldPower Axeandautopistol.Admittedly, thechainswordis a bit moreWarhammer-likeand does have the brilliant option of either slashing with A or a sustained chainsaw-type attack by holding A. The axe only does around 180 damage per hit at anaverage level of 30but is so fast the DPS at this level would be around 360 which is great for the standard A button attack. For big groups or tougher opponents just press RT and it will perform a spinning attack.

Any pesky Nurglings and other beasties that have retreated to the far reaches of the screen can be quickly hosed down with the autopistol in the off-hand slot. The autopistol onWarhammer Inquisitoris a good all-rounder but can also be replaced with thebolt pistolthat does more damage per shot whilst slightly slower firing.

Warhammer 40K Inquisitor Martyris available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
