Thanks to the modding community, there is never a dull moment inSkyrim, such as when someone tinkered with the vanilla experience so much that all the guards in Whiterun inexplicably ended up with high-pitched voices. One of the things that has kept the 2011 Bethesda RPG alive for so long is the fact thatThe Elder Scrolls 5encourages multiple ways of playing. While newcomers to the game can often feel overwhelmed by what they can see and do, veterans are still finding new things out to this day.

Thanks to the sheer number of mods that have come about over the past 11 years, the standard experience can be vastly improved, adding even more life to the already pretty dated release. It’s even possible tomodSkyrimso much that it can almost look real. With so many options to choose from, and plenty more coming out all the time, fans are spoiled for ways to mess around withTES5, but sometimes that can have detrimental, if amusing, effects.

Take Reddit user maryjanepurplerain as an example. In a recent post, they mentioned how they’d spent three days “modding and patching"Skyrimto get it just the way they wanted. Unfortunately, there’s a side effect to this in that all the guards in the city of Whiterun now have voices that make them sound like Minions, the annoying yellow creatures once the subject of many Facebook memes. While the game itself looks fantastic with all the mods, it is pretty funny to hear the guards, and only the guards, utter their well-known phrases in a high-tone. Fortunately, maryjanepurplerain was able to ascertain what the problem was, but it does highlight how modding can go wrong sometimes.

Anyone who’s played the game knows thatSkyrim’s Whiterun guards can get up to some weird things, often the result of some unexpected glitch. In a way, they became the stars of the show, especially not long after the game released. Most notably, it was the guard’s constant saying of the “I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow into the knee,” line that many attached to, which has gone on to become a legendary quote in its own right.

As mentioned above, there are simply tons ofinteresting mods forSkyrimfor anyone who wants a change from the vanilla build. While a lot of them are on PC, there are plenty to download on the console versions, but maryjanepurplerain’s recent experience serves as a reminder about not going overboard with too many.

Skyrimis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
