Updated July 30, 2025 by Joe Grantham:Ever since CK3 AGOT launched in 2023, the dedicated mod team has released numerous updates of various sizes. The biggest of these and the most recent, however, was the hotly anticipateddragon update for CK3 AGOT. Alongside being able to hatch, tame, and ride fully animated 3D dragons, players also have access to new start dates. Most excitingly is a Rogue Prince bookmark in the year 106 AC which coincides with the start of House of the Dragon. This allows players to step into the shoes of iconic characters such as the Targaryen brothers; Kings Viserys and Prince Daemon Targaryen.
1Dragons In CK3 AGOT
Hatch, Tame, & Ride Dragons To War
Dragons inCK3 AGOTare a standout feature, especially with how fleshed out they are. These fiery beasts are fully realized characters with traits, growth, and unique appearances, all presented with 3D animations and poses. Players canhatch dragon eggsor tame dragons to become a Dragonrider. They can then be flown to war, ridden for joy, used in sieges, serve as fiery executioners, and much more.
As with anything in the mod, there is a tonne of flavor and unique events surrounding dragons, meaning their presence is always felt, even centuries after dying out. One of the most impressive features is the ability to customize the appearance of dragons. Neck length, horn size, and color are just a few of the options.Playing as a Dragonrider in CK3 AGOTis easily one of the most fun things to do.
2Story Events & Canon Child Births
Relive Moments From The Show, Books, & Lore With Potential Twists
One of the best aspects of theGame of Thronesmod forCK3is that of the story. Despite being a grand strategy game,CK3plays just as much like an RPG, and this is amplified in the mod by custom events and stories. For example, it is possible to relive the events ofHouse of the DragonSeason 1 by playing asDaemon Targaryen. In the mod, he has his own events relating to his war in the Stepstones, and if successful, players can make a different choice than the one he made in the show. Instead of bending his knee to his brother, he could instead lay claim to the Iron Throne.
Other custom events include the Tower of Joy for Ned Stark, the legendary duel between Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen, as well as less well-known stories. In the game rules, players can choose how likely these events are to resolve as they do in the books. Players can also choose to enable the birth of canon children. For example, Ned Stark and Catelyn Tully would have Robb, Sansa, and the others, rather than random children as is the norm forCrusader Kings.

House Of The Dragon Characters Are Also Available Among Others From The Lore
Just as with anyCrusader Kings 3game, players loading upCK3 AGOTfor the first time will get tochoose their starting characterwho they will play as until death, upon which their heir will become the focus of attention. Unlike the base game, however, the characters available are likely to be a tad more recognizable than their historical counterparts.
FromGame of Thronesicons such as Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon to lesser-known lords from the books, the selection is immense.House of the Dragoncharacters also feature prominently in earlier start dates. Additionally, there’s an option to create a ruler, with plenty of immersive features in place for those who take this path, involving the option to revive old noble lines that died off. It’s even possible to make a custom Dragonrider with their own custom dragon.
4Original Soundtracks In CK3 AGOT
These Include Recognizable Renditions & Completely Unique Songs
Incredibly, theGame of Thronesmod forCK3boasts its own soundtrack featuring well over a dozen unique tracks. Some of these are inspired by songs from the books and show, while others are completely original, but nonetheless fitting for war-torn Westeros. The main theme is even an adaption from the mod forCK2and pays tribute to the late composer Aurélien.
From calming renditions perfect for planning the next red wedding to epic war tunes that will flare up upon declaring a rebellion, the soundtrack forCK3 AGOTis absolutely incredible and heightens the overall experience.
5A Stunning Map Of Westeros
Each Region Of The Map Feels Truly Unique & Players Will Spot Iconic Landmarks
One of the first things that players will notice when they start their grand campaign inCK3 AGOT, is the absolutely stunning map of Westeros, which has been sculpted in extraordinary detail. The map is also extremely large, with Westeros being nearly as large as the entire map found in the base game.
Each region of Westeros feels truly unique whilst mirroring real aspects of the natural world in impressive detail. As most of a player’s time in anyGrand Strategy gameis spent staring at the map, this is a huge asset and truly helps with the immersion. The west coast of Essos was also added, with just as much detail, and players can expect to see more of this vast continent in the future.
6Unique Cities & Castles
Players Can Visit, Control, Or Siege Iconic Locations
Going above and beyond, the developers ofCK3 AGOThave created custom models for certain cities and castles, recreating epic descriptions from the books. The buildings will be seen on the map and help players fall through the screen and into the world. Taking these beautifully crafted cities and castles in war feels all the more rewarding.
Examples of custom models include manyiconic locations such as King’s Landingand Castle Black, which featured heavily in the show, as well as locations such as Highgarden, which even book readers haven’t yet visited in POV chapters. The cities of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh in Essos, are especially beautiful.
7Custom Throne Rooms & Artifacts
This Is Mainly For Owners Of The Royal Court DLC
ForCrusader Kings 3players who own the Royal Courts DLC, which added artifacts and throne rooms to the game, theCK3 AGOTmod features its own examples of these. Naturally, the Iron Throne and the throne room in which it stands take center stage and will serve as further motivation to take control of the realm. Many of the more important Houses also have unique throne rooms.
OtherGame of Thronesartifacts inCK3 AGOT, which rival the best artifacts in the base game, include the many crowns of past Targaryen kings and Valyrian Steel swords such as Ice, the ancestral sword of House Stark. Easily the most desirable, however, are stone dragon eggs, which can possibly be hatched.
8Custom Armor & Clothing
Each Region Of Westeros Is Represented With Custom Armor & Certain Characters Have Their Own
Although perhaps not given the same love as food in theA Song of Ice and Fireseries, there are still plenty of descriptions of armor in the books.Rhaegar Targaryen’s armor, for example, is particularly iconic, with the three-headed dragon of his house being made up of red rubies on his black breastplate.
The white cloaks of the Kingsguard, are arguably even more iconic, and all of these and more can be seen fantastically modeled in the mod. Throughout the mod’s existence, even more armor and custom clothing have been added.
9New Mechanics
These Help CK3 Fit Into The Game Of Thrones Universe & Offer Unique Experiences
Beyond the wealth of lore and cosmetics,CK3 AGOTalso features its own set of new mechanics, providing players with a truly unique experience. These include the much-loved mega wars from theCK2mod, which will testthe war skills of experienced crusader kings, as well as systems for the Kingsguard and the Night’s Watch. Playing atop The Wall makes use of the Struggle system from the base game.
The small council has also been expanded upon and revamped, and the journey of becoming a knight of the seven kingdoms feels rich and rewarding through the squire system. There is even a mechanic for the ruins found throughout Westeros. Before starting a playthrough, it’s best to look atCK3 AGOT’scustom game rules.
10There’s More To Come!
The Mod Is Technically A Beta & Always Being Updated
One of the best things aboutCK3 AGOTis that this is only the start. First, asCrusader Kings 3itself improves with both free updates andpaid expansion packs, like the Tours & Tournaments DLC, the potential of the mod increases with future mechanics. For example, the addition of travel, regencies, and grand weddings all improved the mod immensely, and the same can be expected of the upcoming landless content arriving withRoads to Power.
Secondly, the developers ofCK3 AGOTare committed to the long-term success of the mod with plans to bring the rest of Essos to life and, of course, more bookmarks and start dates will eventually be added. The first two bookmarks were Robert’s Rebellion and The Crowned Stag, but more have been released since, including ones around the time ofHouse of the Dragon. These arrived with the dragon update. Future content could include White Walkers, direwolves, and other surprises.
