What Is District 13?
The main setting ofThe Hunger Gamesis Panem, which has been divided up into thirteen districts. Each district has its own industry, but the Capitol sometimes lies to the residents of Panem so they can remain in charge. While District 13 excels at technology and nuclear science, the Capitol tells everyone that District 13’s one industry is graphite mining. District 13 is actually much more powerful than the Capitol wants everyone to think, and this causes tension throughout the story.

Katniss and the other characters have always been told that District 13 is in terrible shape. However, as Katniss is an intelligent and resourceful character, she realizes that something seems off. Katniss figures out the truth about District 13: the Capitol has been showing fake footage of bombs dropping on District 13. There are manytwists at the end ofThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, and before that point in the story, Katniss makes a big discovery: District 13 is completely fine. The Capitol and District 13 made a deal that if District 13 didn’t harm the Capitol, then District 13 could be left alone.
What Is Life Like For Characters In District 13?
Katniss Everdeen Lives In District 12 In The Hunger Games
While there is a large focus on District 13 inThe Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, which is the most memorable location in the books by Suzanne Collins and the film franchise. Whilecertain things are different inThe Hunger Gamesbooks and movies, the franchise paints a miserable picture of District 12. The residents don’t have much money thanks to the fact that they no longer mine coal because of the effects of the Second Rebellion. While their industry is medicine, the people living there don’t have any luxuries.
District 12 is also part of a major plot point inThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire. At the end of the first movie in the franchise, Katniss and Peeta are the two winners of the Games, which leads tothe shocking ending ofThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire. When the second movie ends, Katniss learns that the Capitol has ruined District 12.

As Gale says to Katniss:
“There is no District 12. It’s all gone.”
District 12 drives home the main message ofThe Hunger Games: that if the characters don’t live in the Capitol of Panem, they are going to have a much more difficult life. It’s a major surprise when Katniss decides to compete in the Hunger Games and is actually successful because people have long believed that no one from District 12 can survive the Games.

In 2012, Jennifer Lawrence was interviewed byThe Guardianand praised the message of the books and movies:
“It’s about a government that has control over its people by keeping them separated and hungry and weak so that they can’t fight back, which is completely real in so many countries. Fortunately in this story the people become angry enough to fight back.”

Is District 13 In The Hunger Games?
The residents of District 13 don’t compete in The Hunger Games since for as long as characters like Katniss Everdeen can remember, District 13 was ruined during the wars. But, as Katniss figures out, that wasn’t true at all. Even though no tributes from District 13 fight in The Hunger Games, District 13 still becomes a significant part of the franchise as Katniss looks into what happened there. Jennifer Lawrence portrays Katniss as a teenager who is as vulnerable as she is strong, and that is one reason whyThe Hunger Gamesfilms are some ofLawrence’s best movies.
The thirteen districts are so distinctive and memorable because they each have a unique strength. In a 2018 interview withThe New York Times, Suzanne Collins explained why she wanted each district inThe Hunger Gamesto focus on a different industry. Collins said:
“I knew there were thirteen districts — that’s a nod to the thirteen colonies — and that they’d each be known for a specific industry. I knew 12 would be coal and most of the others were set, but I had a few blanks that naturally filled in as the story evolved. When I was little we had that board game, Game of the States, where each state was identified by its exports. And even today we associate different locations in the country with a product, with seafood or wine or tech.”
