AMC Studios announced the initial cast forTales of the Walking Dead, AMC’s new spin-off in theWalking Deaduniverse. Anthony Edwards fromInventing Anna,Parker Posey fromLost in Space, Terry Crews fromBrooklyn Nine-Nine, Poppy Liu fromDead Ringers, and Jillian Bell fromRough Nighthave been announced.

The Walking Deadspin-off has an interesting premise, with each episode being an hour-long standalone set in the world of the original series. The series has also tapped an all-star list of directors, with Haifaa al-Mansour fromGood Lord Bird,Deborah KampmeierfromStar Trek: Picard, and Tara Nicole Weyr fromThe Wildseach directing one episode. Series producer Michael Satrazemis fromThe Walking DeadandFear the Walking Deadis set to direct three episodes.

The Walking Deadexecutive producer Scott M. Gimple, who also doubles up as the Chef Content Officer of theWalking Deaduniverse, expressed his excitement about the cast in a statement. “Anthony, Jillian, Terry, Parker, and Poppy are the first wave of singular talents who will further expand the Walking Dead Universe into harrowing, hilarious, heartfelt, and horrifying new realms, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome them to the family, along with these terrific directors." Gimple also teased additional announcements aboutThe Walking Deadanthology seriesinvolving more “wonderful folks” will be coming down the line.

Showrunner Channing Powell, who has previously worked onThe Walking DeadandFear the Walking Deadas a writer-producer, said that he can’t wait for the old and newThe Walking Deadfans to see what they have in store for them. He said that they can expect the usual depth, drama, and terror. He also hinted that fans can expect this to be more humorous than the other series in theWalking Deaduniverse.

WithThe Walking Deadset to air its final seasonfrom February 13th, fans have been clamouring about where the universe will go from there. The long-term fans will finally get to see where their favorite characters end up in their various journeys and the casual ones might also tune in hopes of catching a glimpse of cameos by old cast members. But both old, new, and casual fans can agree that the universe definitely needs a fresh take on the battle with Zombies.

With the cast announcement, it seemsThe Walking Deaduniverse is trying new things. Adding humor and comedic actors like Crews, it’s clear thatThe Walking Deadis about to tread new ground. It remains to be seen how fans will respond to that.
