Many considerTactics Ogreto be one of the greatest tactical role-playing games of all time. Initially released for the SNES by the now-defunct developer Quest Corporation, it significantly impacted later SquareSoft andSquare Enix games likeVagrant StoryandFinal Fantasy Tactics.Excluding remakes, there has not been a newTactics Ogregame sinceTactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodisfor the Game Boy Advance in 200l. However, that may soon change, asSquare Enixrecently filed a Japanese trademark application forTactics Ogre: Reborn.RELATED:New Chrono Cross Screenshots Compare Original to RemasterJapanese Twitter user Renka_schedule discovered the trademark application and shared it on social media. In addition, they posted a screenshot of the application with the caption “Square EnixTactics Ogre: Reborntrademark application.” ATactics Ogreremaster was previously leaked as part of theNvidia GeForce Now leak last November. However, Square Enix still hasn’t offered up a full announcement. Thus, there’s no indication of when development might begin or how long until release. Square Enix’s trademark application is thus the closest that fans have gotten to an official confirmation.
Of course, a trademark application does not mean that a game or product is coming soon. For example, in 2019,Sony filed trademark applications for the next 20-30 years of PlayStation consoles. While that’s an extreme example, it shows that some game companies are willing to sit on a trademark for years in case they need it. Thus,Tactics Ogre: Rebornmight be at least a few years away, assuming Square Enix doesn’t scrap the idea at some point. Fans will just have to hope that a full announcement comes sooner rather than later.
For anyone unfamiliar withTactics Ogre, it is the second game in theOgre Battlefranchise, which began withOgre Battle: The March of the Black Queenin 1993. The game’s full title isTactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.The turn-based tactical RPGwas released on the Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, and original PlayStation in 1995, 1996, and 1997 respectively, with the PlayStation version coming to the US the following year. The game saw widespread praise for its gameplay and story. The latter was heavily influenced by real-world events such as the reunification of Germany, the then ongoing Yugoslav Wars, and other armed conflicts of the 1980s and 90s.
Square Enix remadeTactics Ogrefor the PlayStation Portable in 2010, with the studio bringing back many of the original developers. The remake topped sales charts in Japan and saw an overall positive reception worldwide. However,the PSP’s discontinuation in 2014means thatTactics Ogreis no longer as accessible as it used to be. Hopefully,Tactics Ogre: Rebornwill help to rectify this problem.
