Summary
One of the best aspects of any RPG tends to be the customization that it gives players.Baldur’s Gate 3gave them virtually limitless control to design the character of their dreams, and nowStarfieldhas done the same thing. Bethesda has not only crafted an exciting character creator, but it has also given players the ability to build their dream ship. While the system is not perfect, it is a fantastic addition toStarfieldthat should be the perfect time killer for players.
SinceStarfieldis a sci-fi game, spaceships play a significant role throughout the universe. Players can just use the base game ships if they want. However, those who want to construct their very own ship also have that ability. This has already led to some impressive designs from franchises likeStar WarsandStar Trek, and it will likely lead to even more as the years go by. This freedom has given the game a ton of life, which is all anyone could ask for from a massive RPG like it.

Starfield’s Ship Building is the Perfect Time Killer
After players aregiven their first ship inStarfield, they are able to customize it to their liking. They must first head to a city with a spaceport and then track down that city’s space technician. Once they find them, they can enter the advanced building menu that Bethesda has included. While things can get awfully expensive extremely quickly, players will likely get lost in this feature for hours.
Players have the option to either build onto the ship they came with or delete it all to start from scratch. They can then attach all sorts of modules to their ship to design whatever they want. They must pay attention to the weight, strength, and reactor size as they build, but that does not limit them too much. The biggest thing holding back their building is their level since they mustlevel up their Starship Design abilitiesto unlock stronger components. That will require a bit of grinding, yet it is all worth it in the end.
There are so many different parts that players can play with, with each changing the ship’s stats. The best ships are those that can balance the core stats. However, most players may just want to build their favorite ships from popular sci-fi franchises instead, andStarfieldlets them do just that. Over the past week, players have already filled social media with pictures ofpopular ships from franchises likeStar Warsrecreated in this shipbuilder. While Bethesda has not given players an easy way to share these with other players, it is awesome to see what people have been able to pull off so far.
Starfield’s ships are an impressive additionto the formula, yet they are eerily reminiscent ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s character creator. For those first couple of weeks, it seemed like everyone was sharing their characters across social media. Players were painstakingly recreating popular fantasy characters or themselves in the creator, and it led to some pretty impressive creations. It was cool to see what everyone was creating, which theStarfieldcommunity seems to be repeating.
Giving players the tools to create whatever they want seems to be a recipe for success ifBaldur’s Gate 3andStarfieldare anything to go by. While it likely takes a lot of resources to craft systems like this, they go a long way in giving these RPGs life. Hopefully, this serves as a lesson to other RPG developers that players want as much freedom as they can get. No matter what it is, if players can customize it, then they will run wild with it.
Starfieldis available now for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
