Of the four main factions inStarfield, two are associated with the Freestar Collective. However, while Ryujin Industries only looks after its own interests, the Freestar Rangers put their lives on the line to try and defend Freestar citizens.

Players can get an invitation to the Rangers by helping to deal with a bank heist in the mission “Job Gone Wrong.” This mission is almost unavoidable, especially sinceStarfieldplayers must resolve it during the main quest. The follow-up mission, “Deputized,” is much easier to avoid, but players who want to become a Ranger should head over to The Rock in Akila City.

How to Pass Emma’s Test

The mission “Deputized” starts by pointing to a woman named Emma Wilcox, who’s in bar inside The Rock. She appreciates that Marshal Daniel recommended the player, but she has a test of her own: choose and complete a mission from the Freestar Rangers Mission Board. The mission board in question is also in the bar, and it’s right by the entrance.

Like with other mission boards, the game randomly generates these Freestar Ranger missions, but there’s nothing unique or unusually dangerous about them. Players are free to choose all four missions on offer, but they only need to complete one of them to continue “Deputized.”

After the mission, return to Emma and tell her the good news. She’ll lead the player up to the marshal’s office, where Marshal Daniel will swear players in as a Freestar Deputy. But before going in, be sure to pick up the skill magazine Gunslinger’s Guide 01 from the table in front of the marshal’s office.

Once players swear to defend the people of the Freestar Collective, they’ll get a set of five items: a Freestar Deputy Badge, a Ranger Deputy Uniform, a Deputy Hat,the unique pistol Deadeye, and seven rounds of ammo for the gun. Deadeye is a powerful but common revolver with a fancy design, though exactly how dangerous it is depends on the player’s current level.

Montara Luna and the Waggoner Farm

Freestar Rangers have no time to waste, it seems, because the mission immediately sends players and Emma Wilcox to Montara Luna. A farmer, Mikaela Waggoner, is worried about threats against her life and her farm, and it’s up to the rangers to sort things out. Montara Luna is a moon of Montara, a gas giant in the Cheyenne system, so players won’t have to go far to reach her.

For the rest of this mission, Emma Wilcox becomes a follower (though technically players should be following her lead as her deputy). If players have a regular follower, they’ll stick around during this mission since Emma is a conditional follower. However, something to keep in mind is that any friendly fire will cause Emma to attack the player. Emma can’t die, and she’ll calm down once players reduce her health to zero, but in the process players will geta Freestar Collective bountyand anger their regular follower.

Once players arrive on Montara Luna, Mikaela will greet them and explain the situation: four ruffians in old FC army uniforms demanded her farm for an absurdly low price, and she’s worried they’ll come back again with weapons drawn. The ruffians are hiding out in the canyon nearby, so players and Emma will need to track them down.

What to Do With the Ruffians

After speaking to Mikaela, the objective marker will point to a spot on the ground labeled “boot tracks.” Examine them to reveal a new objective marker deeper in the canyons, then the next, then the next, and eventually they’ll lead to the ruffians' hideout.

Along the way, players mustdeal with the hostile life formsof Montara Luna. Swarming Sunflowers and Pack Octomaggots have a Territorial temperament rather than Aggressive or Fearless, but Territorial is enough to make them attack the player in the narrow canyons.

However, players can also skip this entire section. Montara Luna’s gravity is only 0.39, making it easy forplayers with a decent boost packto leap across the canyons and bypass all the animals. Simply look east from the Waggoner Farm and start boosting. To spot the hideout, look for the lights coming from below during the night or look for the parked HopeTech ship during the day. Once players enter the camp, the mission will skip all the boot track steps.

Unfortunately, the ruffians are too confident in their numbers, and the encounter will end in violence no matter what players say to their leader. This means players can get the drop on the ruffians and ambush them from a distance without making anyone mad, but then players will miss out on hints that the ruffians are connected to the earlier bank heist and a “Major” who wants something buried under the Waggoner Farm.

Once all four ruffians are down, speak to Emma and start searching the camp for clues. The key piece of evidence is a data slate on the ruffian leader called “Job’s Done,” but keep searching the camp to find the skill magazine Grunt Issue 03 near where the leader started anda military crate full of randomized loot. Read the slate and speak to Emma again to continue the mission.

With all that done, head back to the farm and speak with Mikaela again. Players can ask for credits when talking to her, but Emma will chide players who try it. Even so, the mission will end and players will get a reward of 250 XP and a large amount of level-scaled credits. The next Ranger mission,“Where Hope Is Built,“will then begin.
