When a remaster ofStar Wars Episode 1: Racerwas revealed to be in the works, fans were understandably excited. The 1999pod racing gamehas long been a fan favorite amongStar Warsfanatics, so the remaster seems like a perfect choice. Now the game has an official release date, and will be coming to both Nintendo Switch and PS4 on May 12th.

May 12th is quite a bit earlier than fans expected when the project was first announced, and with the game coming to both Switch and PS4, it should be available to many. For the most part,Star Wars Episode 1: Racerwill remain unchanged in its new form, with most of the updates being graphical or performance related.

This means that the remaster should feature all 25 playable racers that the original game did, eight planets on which to pod race, andfour podracing circuitsfor players to master. Time will tell if anything will be added on top of this.

PlayStation’s tweet earlier today about the new release date appropriately includes the infamous Anakin quote, “Now this is podracing,” and also features some gameplay from the 1999 classic. Of note is that the PS4 version of the game will also feature a full list of trophies, including aplatinum trophywhich can be attained by unlocking all others as usual. This is nice, as many smaller games don’t have platinum trophies, and it adds an extra layer of depth and challenges to the game that would otherwise be absent.

The swift release of this port comes at the perfect time, as many are at a loss trying to find things to do while self-isolating. ThoughSony’s Play at Home initiativebrings players free games in the form of theNathan Drake CollectionandJourney, many players are finding they still have too much time on their hands. A nostalgic throwback to the end of the nineties may be just what players need to escape the craziness of the world today and return to the craziness of the world ofStar Warspod racing instead.

Keep an eye out for more updates as May 12th and the release ofStar Wars Episode 1: Racerdraws nearer, as both Sony and the game’s developer, Aspyr, are likely to bring more information to the table soon. Until then, players should engage with Sony’s Play at Home initiative, or try thistrick to getKnack 2for free on PS4as well.
