Now that theSteam Deckis out in the wild, users are learning and figuring out all kinds of different things about the handheld game console. In fact, one enterprisingSteam Deckuser has even figured out how to incorporate an Apple Air Tag into the device so that people can have a way to track it should they lose it while playing it on the go.
One of the most useful features of Apple devices has long been the fact that they are loaded up with technology that allows people to rather easily find them should they get lost or get stolen. Apple’s Air Tag is a small device that was released as a way to use that technology for things that aren’t produced by the Cupertino company. With moreSteam Decks being released en massein the near future, and no built-in way to track the mobile gaming device, a Reddit user has figured out how to use the trackers even if takes a bit of work.

Redditor mikerfxm posted a video showing how they were able to slip the small tracker disc into the housing of the Steam Deck under its right grip. The user also explained that placing the Air Tag in the right spot allowed its insertion without interrupting rear R4 and R5 macro buttons.
Considering that theSteam Deck has already had some performance issuespop up since it was released, the user did note that the exact placement of the disc was important, but if done right it doesn’t require any more tools than a screwdriver in order to remove the backplate and open the console. Once the device is inserted, being able to track it is as simple as if someone attached the Air Tag to their key ring or slipped it into their wallet.
Soon after the Redditor posted the video some other users did have suggestions for how to be a little more sure that the tracker wasn’t going to eventually cause problems. WithSteam Deck supplies soon to numberin the hundreds of thousands, suggestions like wrapping the Tag in something like electrical tape to make it a bit safer against shorting things out could come in handy.
Assuming that this particular fix continues to be workable and it doesn’t eventually cause problems inside the device it does seem to give theSteam Deck a leg up on its main competitionin the Nintendo Switch. As this particular approach was just discovered so long-term effects are unknown, there should be some caution used for those who want to do it themselves.
