WhenDemon’s Soulsfirst released in 2009, its unique combat and difficulty resonated with players.Dark Soulsand its 2 sequels would then build on the gameplay throughout the next 7 years to widespread acclaim,record-breaking sales, and cement the entire series as one of the greatest of all time. Over a decade later, fans are delighted to hear a remake of the originalDemon’s Soulsis coming out for PS5 in November. But the new trailer reveals one thing that not everyone is excited about.

As many veteran players can confirm, there is a process to fighting and defeating new enemies throughout theSoulsgames. However, the learning curve more often than not means everyone inevitablyfalls in battle against some foeseven while trying their hardest. At that point, the words ‘YOU DIED’ appears in blood red as players get sent back to the start of the level. TheDemon’s Soulsremake will still feature this iconic message, but with a new design that isn’t being well received.

On Twitter, many fans are posting about the jarring change to the ‘YOU DIED’ message in the remake compared to how it looks in every prior entry. Patrick Klepek directly contrasts the 2 images side-by-side noting that “This is rough” and that there’s still time forBluepoint Gamesto change or revert the font if they choose.

From a design perspective, the font is fine and would even look good in another genre. ForDemon’s Souls, however, this look simply doesn’t fit the ancient setting filled with magic and monsters, especially not against the previous font. Furthermore, some fans have issues with the new ‘U’ since its asymmetry clashes against the old look as well as its fellow letters in the remake design.

As a result, some users have also posted their own ‘YOU DIED’ replacements to show how silly any other font is against the original. Similarly, another reply notes how the original font makes any message look amazing and there’s always thepossibility of moddingit in even if the current design remains unchanged.

In the end, theDemon’s Soulsremake is shaping up to be a hit with the fan base whether or not the current font is reverted or remains the same. But if Bluepoint Games does listen to players, it could earn even more favor going into the release date. Considering the remake intends to capture the originalDemon’s Soulsgameplay in modern graphics, reverting this small but significant detail could appeal to more members of the community than just those on social media.
