A luckySkyrimplayer has received a massive inheritance following the death of one of their NPC friends. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimwill turn 12 years old later this year and is one of the bestselling games of all time. Over the decade-plus since its launch, the Bethesda RPG has maintained an incredibly dedicated community of fans and modders, some of whom are still discovering new things in Tamriel’s northernmost province, Skyrim.

In the vast world ofSkyrim, the Dragonborn is bound to make a lot of enemies, but certainly some good friends as well. As such, when a friendship is made between the player and an NPC, the NPC can include the Dragonborn in their will, leaving behind gold and sometimes even their home to be inherited by the player upon their passing. When this happens, a courier will deliver the player a letter of inheritance that announces the death of the NPC and declares theamount of gold pieces that will be passed to the Dragonborn. Of course, the Jarl’s tax comes into play, deducting 10% of the total amount of gold.

Reddit user Altruistic_Tax_9918 posted an image to theSkyrimsubreddit of an inheritance letter that had been delivered to them. The letter announces the death of theirAscendant Necromancerfriend and discloses a whopping amount of 2,052,972,800 gold pieces that have been left to the player’s name. The letter continues on to claim that the 10% cut for the Jarl’s court amounts to 205,291,280 gold, leaving the player around 1.8 billion gold pieces. The Reddit post has been taken down, as some in theSkyrimcommunity have been questioning the legitimacy of the inheritance letter and its extreme amount of gold.

This exorbitant amount of gold pieces allegedly inherited by the player isn’t supposed to be so high, as the typical amount left behind by friends of the Dragonborn usually ranges between 100-500 gold. It’s unclear whether the player has any mods running that would tamper with the inheritance system or if it’s a bug in the base game. Players have reportedsmaller bugs tied toSkyrim’s inheritance mechanicsince the game launched. Issues such as the name of the NPC appearing as “Bandit” or inheritance letters that are almost completely blank have popped up for players in the past. There have even been reports of players receiving an inheritance from NPCs who are still alive.

Bethesda’s RPGs have garnered a reputation for being charmingly buggy, but a bug of this magnitude being discovered almost 12 years after the game’s initial launch is unusual. Nevertheless, with nearly two billion shiny gold pieces clanking around in their pocket, this Dragonborn is set up pretty well for the rest of their adventure through Skyrim if the inheritance letter is in fact legitimate.

The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrimis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
