The June 2022 PlayStation State of Play event featured a variety of major announcements likeResident Evil 4’s remakeandFinal Fantasy 16’s release window. Between these huge announcements, PlayStation still managed to give the spotlight to some exciting upcoming indie games.Season: A Letter to the Futurestood out among these indie showcases. A new trailer forSeason: A Latter to the Futurerevealed some exciting new gameplay, while also sharing new information about the adventure game’s upcoming release.

Season: A Letter to the Futurewas originally revealed in 2020 during that year’sThe Game Awardspresentation. The strange adventure game’s announcement trailer introduced audiences to a young woman riding her bike through beautiful environments, cataloging cultures in the moments before calamity. Her “letter to the future” journaling a final season seemed as touching as it did tragic, but left interested indie game fans curious for more.

The new trailer forSeason: A Letter to the Futureprovides a similar but more in-depth look at what’s previously been shown. It’s a more intimate look at the game’s protagonist and the work she’s doing, including audio recordings, photographs, drawings, and interviews. There are also a significant number of new environments and new characters briefly teased in the trailer. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trailer is the pervasive melancholy despite all the smiling faces and beautiful environments.

Also confirmed alongside the newSeason: A Letter to the Futuretrailer is that the game will be arriving later this year. “Autumn” is the current release window, which is unfortunately unspecific, but it’s better than what interested gamers had before.Season: A Letter to the Futurewill also now be released on PlayStation 4 in addition toPlayStation 5and PC, broadening the game’s potential audience.

Originally thought to be arriving in 2021, it’s unclear if developerScavengers Studiohad issues with the game or if the scope of the project inflated the time required to finish it. Scavengers did struggle with a controversy surrounding abuse allegations against a co-founder of the company. It’s unclear how the controversy impactedSeason: A Letter to the Future, if at all.

It’s somewhat surprising how similarSeason: A Letter to the Futurelooks between its 2020 announcement trailer and the newState of Play 2022trailer. Scavengers could be working on maintaining the mystery of the game prior to launch, or perhaps the two trailers simply show how uniform the vision for the project has remained over the years. Either way, it won’t be long before players can experience the beauty ofSeason: A Letter to the Futurefor themselves.

Season: A Letter to the Futurereleases this autumn on PC, PS4, and PS5.
