The Paldean Wooper was one of the first Pokemon to be revealed forPokemon ScarletandPokemon Violet. While Paldean Wooper shares its Ground-typing with its Johto counterpart, it loses the Water-typing for Poison-typing instead, thus making it a Poison/Ground dual-type Pokemon. This Wooper doesn’t evolve into a Paldean Quagsire, but rather an entirely different species called Clodsire.
Unfortunately, the Water/Ground-type Wooper can’t be found anywhere in the Paldean wild. However, there’s exactly one Johtonian Wooper inPokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet, and getting it involves trading. The trade itself isn’t via the Pokemon Portal or Union Circle. Instead, players will want to take a Paldean Wooper to a certain city in western Paldea.
Updated on June 25, 2025 by Renri Seong:Thanks to The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion pack forPokemon Scarlet & Violet, many Pokemon from previous generations are now compatible with Gen 9. Among them is the original Water/Ground-type Wooper. Prior to The Teal Mask (part 1 of the expansion pack), players could only catch the Paldean Wooper, and they could trade it for a “Johtonian” Wooper with an NPC in Cascarrafa. In Kitakami, Wooper is one of the more common Pokemon, thus providing a second way of obtaining an original Wooper without the need to trade. The following guide has been updated to include new ways to catch Wooper in The Teal Mask.

Where to Trade Paldean Wooper
Obtaining Paldean Wooper
Rookie trainers can catchthe Poison/Ground-typevery early in the game. The first sighting of Paldean Wooper is by thepond near the pathbetween Los PlatosandPoco Path Lighthouse. The Woopers here will be around level 5, meaning trainers can catch one before they even reach Mesagoza. For those that may have missed the level 5 Wooper, don’t worry. Paldean Wooper also live in the southern part of Paldea and can be caught at any of the highlighted locations on the map in the image above.
The next step is to go toCascarrafa. On the second level of the city (between Cascarrafa Gym, and the lower level by the Asado Desert), there’s a fountain in the middle of the square. Here, there will be an NPC who will want a Paldean Wooper. (Players can read this in the yellow word bubble above her head.) Speak to her, and she’ll ask if players want to trade their Paldean Wooper for a Johtonian Wooper.
As a traded Pokemon, the Johtonian Wooper is already nicknamed (Manchester). It is level 18, and will receive bonus EXP in battle. Unlike its Paldean counterpart, this Wooper will evolve into theWater/Ground-typeQuagsireat level 20 instead ofClodsire.

How to Get More Johtonian Woopers
If playersdo not haveThe Teal Mask DLC and want another Johtonian Wooper, they will have to breed the Wooper they got from the trade. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as putting the traded Wooper with a Paldean Wooper. Trainers will need tomake sure the Johtonian Wooper (or Quagsire) is holding an Everstonebefore taking it on a picnic with a Ditto or another compatible Pokemon. The Everstone will ensure that the offspring Pokemon is Johtonian Wooper and not the Paldean Wooper.
To increase theprobability of Pokemon Eggs appearing, make sandwiches that have theEgg Powermeal effect. Sandwiches that contain mostly sweet ingredients (such as fruit, peanut butter, whipped cream, or jam) will have Egg Power. Additionally, there are “sweet recipes” that players can get from the man at the Sandwich Stores around Paldea. For those that don’t have time or the ingredients for crafting sandwiches, buy food from restaurants or ice cream stands. Each food item will have its effects listed.
Players should also keep in mind that having an Everstone on a Pokemon for breeding means that theparent’s nature will be carried over to the offspring. So if the parent Johtonian Wooper has a Brave Nature, its child will have Brave Nature too. To change this, players can make a save file before they trade with the Cascarrafa NPC. If Wooper doesn’t have the right Nature, then they can soft-reset. Alternatively, players can go to theChansey Supplystore and buy a Nature Mint. Trainers thatdon’t care for Pokemon Naturesor EVs won’t have to worry about this.
Where to Catch Wooper & Quagsire in The Teal Mask
Players that have The Teal Mask DLC can access Kitakami, a new region with new and old Pokemon. To do so, they will need to have started the three main storylines ofScarlet/Violet:
From there, speak to Briar at Naranja/Uva Academy to go to Kitakami. As soon as players land in this new area, they’ll need to go to Mossui Town to speak to the Caretaker. However, players are free to catch the new Pokemon along the way.
Wooper can be found in the rice paddies onKitakami Road, which is the road leading toMossui Townfrom theBus Stop. Its level can be aroundlevel 10, or, if players have already completed the main story ofSV,level 60.Thanks to its Water-typing, players can try catching it with Net Balls, which have a higher catch rate when used on a Bug or Water-type Pokemon.
Those that don’t want to level their Wooper to 20 can instead look for Quagsire. These Pokemon will appear inFellhorn Gorge(nearKitakami Hall), but players can find aPoison-type Terastallized Quagsirein theTimeless Woods. Be warned that the Terastallized Quagsire will always belevel 55regardless if players have finished the main story or not.
Finally, another way to catch Wooper and Quagsire is to fight them in Tera Raids. Wooper will appear in1-Star Tera Raids, while Quagsire only spawns in4-Star Tera Raidsand6-Star Tera Raids. Keep in mind that in orderto get a 6-Star Tera Raid,Scarlet/Violetplayers will need to have finished the postgame/Ace Academy Tournament. This will unlock a quest that eventually leads to the spawning of 6-Star Tera Raids. These are much more challenging than 5-Star Tera Raids, so bring a Pokemon that’slevel 100, and have it equipped with a solid moveset.

Quagsire vs. Clodsire
Johtonian Wooper and Quagsire’s stats are more well-rounded than their Paldean counterparts, who excel in HP and Special Defense. As a Water/Ground-type, Quagsire shares Clodsire’s immunity to Electric-type moves. However, Quagsire and its pre-evolved form will take4x damagefrom Grass-type moves. Most of Quagsire’s learnset is made of Physical moves such as Slam, but its all-around stats mean that it can make better use of Special moves like Ice Beam.
Quagsire has a Type advantage over Clodsire, but it lacks the Special Defense that Clodsire has. It’s also only a little faster than Clodsire and while its Special Attack is higher, Quagsire works better as a Physical attacker. It’s likely thatScarlet/Violettrainers will get the Johtonian Wooperjust for completion’s sake.
Ultimately, it’s up to players whether they want to keep a Johtonian Wooper/Quagsire on their final team. There are many Water-type and Ground-type Pokemon new and old in Paldea, so it’s likely that Quagsire may be overlooked. It should also be noted that players do not need to get the Johtonian Wooper (or its evolution) to complete the Paldean Pokedex, but theywillneed it for the Kitakami Pokedex.
