ThePokemon TCGhas produced some thousands of designs for the Pokemon, trainers, and items that make up its franchise. Some of these looks have even helped create valuable collectibles. For those cards that haven’t reached that kind of status, fans have begun to make works of art out of them. In a recent display of this creativity, one player combined a whole host of energy cards to create an impressivePokemon TCGmosaic that features Bulbasaur and Squirtle.
ThePokemonfranchise has sold billions of cardssince it was first published in 1996 and features thousands of unique designs. Energy cards play an important role in thePokemon TCGin that they allow Pokemon to attack and deal damage. The Pokemon created with these cards in this artwork are Bulbasaur and Squirtle, the grass and water type starters from the first generation.

This framed piece of art comes from u/monty_vincent, and it features a wide variety of energy cards as its medium. There have been an assortment of differentPokemoncreations using this format lately, including a Hisuian Growlithe. Similar to that creation, in the frame within this post are energy cards both surrounding the Pokemon and making them up. They have been cut up into different sized sections and laid out to create thisPokemonmosaic. The image they create shows off both a Bulbasaur and a Squirtle hugging one another. There even appears to be small tears rolling down each of their eyes. These Pokemon are outlined in black and the image perfectly conveys these two starters fromPokemon’s first generation.
Judging from the title of this post, this creation is made up almost entirely of these cards. The blue and green that make up both Squirtle and Bulbasaur’s bodies must be water and grass cards, respectively. Meanwhile, u/monty_vincent surrounded this hug with metal energy cards. All together this must have taken over two dozen cards to complete.
Energy cards aren’t nearly as artistically interesting asother cards in thePokemon TCG, but they perform an essential function in the game. This importance coupled with their strong colors makes them a perfect medium for aPokemonportrait.
Then again, it is always a bit shocking to see trading cards cut up into different shapes. While the image they create is impressive, there is likely a group within thePokemoncommunity who prefer other mediums. Either way, u/monty_vincent made a wholesome work of art out of some of the most memorablePokemon from the first generation.
