SincePokemon Redand Bluewere released, many generations of players have been reached through multiple sequels, which add new Pokemon to the overall count. CountlessPokemonplayers have imagined their own Pokemon over the years, and one suchPokemonfan has decided to reinterpret Gastly and its evolutions as the fire spirit from Philippines Mythology, Santelmo.
Reddit user Snoo-80905 recently postedPokemonfan art that imagines an alternative look for theGastlyevolution line that includes Haunter and Gengar. Snoo-80905’s version of these Pokemon has Ghost and Fire-typing rather than the Ghost and Poison-typing that Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar all share in thePokemongames. The changes made to these Pokemon reflect the fire spirit from Philippines Mythology beyond just their typing as they all look notably different from the official evolution line.

Snoo-80905’s Gastly has a color scheme of mostly shades of brown and orange that transfers over to each evolution as the Fire-typing does unlike the memorable purple and black colors. Gastly’s eyes are rounded out compared to the original Pokemon, which has relatively pointy eyes, and this change also carries over to Haunter andGengar. Unlike the Gastly thatPokemonfans are familiar with by now, the area surrounding the eyes of Snoo-80905’s variant is shaded as if the Pokemon has large eyelashes which just get larger when it becomes Haunter and are changed into a proper pattern around its eyes when it ultimately evolves into Gengar.
Gastly and its evolutions were introduced inPokemon Red and Blueand the first two Pokemon in the evolution line usually feature pointy teeth, but Snoo-80905’s interpretation of the Pokemon’s mouths is less intimidating to properly represent the fire spirit of Philippines Mythology. Gengar’s teeth wind up looking very similar to its official appearance, but Gastly has two small nubs for teeth, and Haunter has a jaw similar to Pokemon with visual skulls such as Duskull and Dusclops. Two white dots in the center of Gastly’s face spread out as it evolves, while Haunter’s hands are half orange, and Gengar’s limbs are all an orange that fades into its body.
The Philippines Mythological spirit that this evolution line is based on is called Santelmo, and it’s known for mesmerizing humans with its sparks and flames. With the release ofPokemon Sun and Moon,Pokemonfans were first greeted by alternate forms of their favorite Pokemon as the region had Alola forms of them. OtherPokemongames that have been released sinceSun and Moonhave featured their own unique forms, such as thePokemon Sword and ShieldGalarian forms andPokemon Legends: Arceus' Hisuian forms, which may instill hope inPokemonfans that want something similar to Snoo-80905’s fan art in a future game.
