Deadpool 3is shaping up to be a star-studded affair. Patrick Stewart says he’s been told to be on “standby” for the film, though he admitted to not knowing more about the project.
Deadpool 3is set to fold at least some aspects of Fox’s X-Men Universe into the MCU. Not only isHugh Jackman returning as Wolverine, but he’ll also be teaming up with Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool in what’s speculated to be a multiverse-spanning affair. Though it’s unknown how Deadpool and Wolverine will make the transition to the MCU (or if they’ll stick around at all), it is known that Jackman’s send-off inLoganwill be maintained, meaning that Stewart’s exit as Professor X will also likely be respected.

While promoting the final season ofStar Trek: Picard,Stewart was interviewed byComicBook.com, where he was asked about a possible return to the role of Professor X inDeadpool 3. Stewart was candid and replied, “I’ve been told to stand by. I know nothing more than that, honest.” Given how secretive Marvel Studios can be about characters returning, Stewart’s comment about being told to standby is a major revelation of its own.
Deadpool 3will begin filming later this year.Jackman has six months to get into Wolverine shape, meaning that the movie will be shooting far sooner than fans may expect. Despite a nearly two-year wait, fans may know more about a potential Professor X return soon if Stewart is spotted on set. Of course, there’s no guarantee that Stewart’s potential return will amount to anything more than a cameo.
Still, it is good to know that Stewart’s potential return won’t compromiseLogan. ThoughLogandirector James Mangold posted a graphic and morbid tweetpointing out that Wolverine died at the end of his film, Jackman revealed that the director was okay with his return to the role because it would not interfere with the canonicity ofLogan. That means Professor X’s poignant death in that movie is also intact, and the dire circumstances he found himself in won’t necessarily be where fans see him next.
Since the X-Men will likely be recast in the MCU, Stewart probably won’t be Professor X in the main MCU. If that’s the case, any role he plays inDeadpool 3hopefully plays out like a proper send-off for the actor, likeLogan was for Jackman’s Wolverine. After all, Stewart has been playing the role for as long as Jackman has been Wolverine, so the two should at least get one final scene together.
