AnOblivionfan has had ChatGPT AI create some brand-new quests for the game, with some extremely strange results. There are plenty ofamazingOblivionmodsthat add new quests to the game, but these are arguably more interesting than a lot of them out there.
Thequests inOblivionare some of the most iconic quests ever seen in an RPG. Questlines like the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild provided some extremely creative quest design, which still holds up to this day. While the game certainly isn’t in desperate need of more quests, it’s interesting to see exactly what artificial intelligence believes a greatOblivionquest is comprised of.

The ChatGPTOblivionquests were created by Redditor BeautyDuwang, who showed off four of the creations online. Each of the quests is equally strange, with names that match their odd nature. The first quest, Jauffre’s Chilli Dog Dilemma, is about the Hero of Kvatch defeating a set of rampaging chilli dogs for Jauffre. Other quests include The Adoring Fan’s Lettuce and M’aiq’s Magical Scrumpkins, with only The Missing Mother retaining any sense of normality. ChatGPT also provides interesting justifications for each quest. For example, Jauffre’s Chilli Dog Dilemma “challenges the player to solve a unique problem and provides a fun and lighthearted twist to the game’s fantasy setting.”
The use of artificial intelligence is becoming more commonplace within the gaming industry. Concerns will rage on about the ethics of the evolving technology, but gamers are no doubt using it in fresh and interesting ways. OneSkyrimplayer even used ChatGPT to generate new quests, just like thisOblivionplayer. With the creativity of the modding community for Bethesda games, it surely won’t be long until modders are actually recreating these AI-generated quests in-game for others to play and experience. While it’ll likely never overtake the individuality of an actual writer, seeing new technology pushed to its limits is always an interesting prospect.
It remains to be seen how AI will influenceThe Elder Scrolls 6when it eventually releases at some point in the future. The technology is evolving all the time, at a speed more fast-paced than would likely be useful for game development. The concept has already been tried and tested by the modding community, with oneSkyrimAI voice mod adding Master Chief’s voice to the game. Despite the technology being relatively new, it still sounds incredible, and it could be much more advanced by the timeThe Elder Scrolls 6rolls around. It’s an exciting prospect, to say the least, although it’s also possible Bethesda ignores the concept to go with more traditional methods of development.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivionis currently available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
