Nintendoreleased the Switch in March of 2017, introducing gamers to a new gaming system that allowed them to seamlessly swap between TV and portable play. Following thedismal sales of the Wii Uera, the company rebounded shockingly well with this new hybrid console. With Nintendo looking to continue this popularity in 2021 and beyond, it recently launched the Nintendo Switch OLED.
As an upgraded version of the original console, the Nintendo Switch OLEDseemed to live up to the hype for many fans. While the new system failed to improve graphical performance, it featured an improved screen, better battery, and more internal storage. Following the launch of the console in October, Nintendo now has 3 versions of its hybrid console on the market. And the demand looks to be high from consumers.

Recently, the latest NPD hardware figures for November were unveiled, showing the top-selling video game consoles. This new data was exciting for Nintendo as it revealed that the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED combined sales were more than 1.13 million during the month. This was more thanthe Xbox Series Xand PS5. In addition, it also was the best-selling system over the Thanksgiving shopping week, including Black Friday, with almost 550,000 units sold.
Following these new statistics,Nintendoreleased a statement regarding the sales figures. Unsurprisingly, the company seemed pleased with the news that they had outperformed rival companies Sony and Microsoft. In addition to selling the most consoles in November, Nintendo has had the “top-selling video game console for 35 out of the last 36 months.” They attributed this success partly to having 3 different console options for gamers.
It’s worth noting that a contributing factor to the Nintendo Switch family of systems dominating the market during the holiday shopping season was the scarcity of other consoles. Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 continued to experience supply shortages. As a result, this lack of available consoles caused both Microsoft and Sony to sell fewer units. In addition, Nintendo has struggled to meet the demand for the Nintendo Switch OLED since it launched back in October. This meant that even the Japanese company failed to move as many units compared to in November of 2020.
Regardless of supply constraints, it’s doubtlessly exciting for many Nintendo fans to see the various models of the Switch in such high demand. These recent sales figures seem to suggest that gamers are excited about playing some of Nintendo’s new releases, such asMetroid DreadandPokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. While it’s hard to tell what the future holds in these uncertain times, it looks promising for Nintendo as the hybrid console approaches its 5th birthday.
