There hasn’t been much talk of a newStar Trekfilm since 2016’sStar Trek Beyond, which slightly underperformed compared to expectations. While fans have been somewhat divided on the rebootTrekfilms, the brand itself has still been going strong with multiple new shows releasing and being well received in the time since, leading many to wonder when they were due for another big-screen space adventure.

While there have been some rumors of variousStar Trekfilms being worked on and canceled, nothing has actually made it to the point of an official announcement or trailer. However, just recently, it would seem another project has been confirmed to be in the works. Kalinda Vazquez,a writer forStar Trek: Discoveryhas reportedly been asked to write an original screenplay for Paramount set in theTrekuniverse.

Kalinda Vazquez, who was named after theStar Trekcharacter ‘Kelinda,’ is also known for her work as a co-executive producer onFear the Walking Dead, a spin-off from AMC’s highly successful adaptation ofThe Walking Dead. According to Deadline, the developingTrekfilm is Kalinda’s original concept and she has signed a blind deal with Paramount, meaning she will have some freedom in deciding what the final product will look like. J.J Abrams' production company Bad Robot will produce the new project.

Considering the generallypositive reception forDiscovery, it would seem that Vazquez is a good choice to lead a brand newTrekproject. Previous attempts included high-profile figures like Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, but the former eventually stepped down from the project and the latter moved on after Paramount put a hold on his film, wanting to go a different direction.

OtherTrekprojects, in the meantime, have included shows likethe animated comedy seriesLower Decks, which focuses on characters with the less glamorous jobs in Starfleet, as well asStar Trek: Picard, a nostalgia-heavy continuation ofThe Next Generation, complete with Sir Patrick Stewart as the lead. These projects have been fairly popular with fans and show that the interest in the franchisecertainly hasn’t diminished in recent years.

So, hopefully with such a strong base for this new film and the talent behind it, the nextStar Trekfilm will be worthy of the franchise’s legacy. Whatever ends up happening, fans will hopefully have some moreTreknews to chew on very soon.
