A developer from Atlus has revealed that a new mainlineEtrian Odysseygame is still a ways off from being released following the HD port collection. Earlier this week, a Nintendo Direct was held that revealed a number of games coming to the Nintendo Switch. Among these announced titles were a number of remasters and re-releases for the system, bringing old Nintendo classics to modern hardware. This includes critically-acclaimed games likeMetroid Prime Remastered, HD remasters ofBaten Kaitos, and more. One of these wastheEtrian Odyssey Origins Collection,an HD remaster of theEtrian OdysseyDS trilogy.

For the uninitiated, theEtrian Odysseygames are a series of dungeon-crawling RPGs that took advantage ofthe Nintendo DS and its dual-screen features. The first three games were originally released on the DS, where players could form their own party of adventurers facing a variety of dangers. The franchise carried on to the 3DS console, with the latest release beingEtrian Odyssey Nexusin 2018. In a livestream onAtlus' YouTube channel regarding this newEtrian Odysseycollection, the developers answered a number of questions. One of these is regarding the possibility of a new entry in the franchise (57:00 timestamp for VOD), with one of the developers noting that a new entry will not be released any time soon. The reason cited was that the hardware changed a lot, going from the dual-screen format to a single screen on the Switch and PC. The developer notes it would take a lot of time to develop a new entry due to this.

In regard to the remastered versions of the trilogy, they were only possible due to continued research tobring the DS games to modern systems. As a result, the developers asked for feedback regarding these versions of the game once it releases later this summer. Any feedback from those who played these remasters will be utilized in developing futureEtrian Odysseytitles.

Some features fans can expect in the upcoming remasters include the ability to select between three difficulty levels, an auto-map function, save slots, and online support, making the games more accessible for those who didn’t playthe original games on DS.

Etrian Odyssey Origins Collectionwill be released on June 1st, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch and PC.
