Ahead of theCobra Kaiseason 5 premiere, the final clip for the new season had dropped, showing William Zabka’s technologically challenged Johnny Lawrence having a hard time adjusting to the gig economy.
The slew of changes taking place in San Fernando Valley’s karate scene seems to have left the formerCobra Kaisensei without a job, meaning he’s now turned to earning some cash via apps like Uber, Lyft, or “that guy named Jimmy John,” as seen in theNetflixclip. Throughout the whole series, Johnny has been portrayed as an old-timer stuck in the ’80s, with his lack of expertise in using social media, the internet, or even turning on his computer rendering him the butt of many jokes. So now that Miguel is gone, it’s no wonder no one taught sensei Lawrence some basic ride app etiquette.

In the teaser, Johnny drives up to his two riders, and it’s clear he gets off to a bad start by confusing the customer’s name, though that’s hardly the biggest of his offenses. Despite the girls’ best efforts to ignore the beer stench in Johnny’s beat-up Eagle Fang van, he can’t even fulfilla simple song request for Billie Eilishbecause, naturally, Johnny doesn’t stream music and he’s only heard of Billy Idol. That aside, sensei Lawrence’s general disdain for basic traffic rules and telling customers to shut up will probably land him plenty of one-star ratings.
While the mystery of how Johnny keeps his cassette tapes working or how he even manages to record them remains, so doesCobra Kai’s signature humor. Based on this clip, the new season promises to deliver on many of the show’s strongest points. That said, with his days in the ride app business numbered, he’ll definitely have to fall back on his karate chops sooner or later.
Keep in mind that sensei Lawrence’s grasp on the Cobra Kai name is now completely gone, with Terry Silver likely using his financial resources to protect his takeover on all fronts. Judging from the other teasers,Cobra Kai looks like a pretty sick product. Now, since Johnny won’t last too long in the gig economy, he’s bound to join Daniel LaRusso and Chozen’s cause to rescue his dojo.
Considering everyone involved withCobra Kaihas hinted at the show’s potentialto last several more seasons, suiting up in that black gi once more could prove to be a tough affair for Johnny.
Cobra Kaiseason 5 will be released on Netflix on June 04, 2025.
