While everyone assumed a second Kombat Pack was being readied forMortal Kombat 11, NetherRealm Studios surprised everyone by going a step further. Instead of simply adding new characters, the studio createda whole expansion called Aftermathwhich continues the story from the base game. The story picks up from the end of the game and seems to focus in on the Cary Tagawa voiced Shang Tsung as he works with Liu Kang and Raiden to secure Kronika’s Crown.
A narrative expansion is something completely new for the franchise as typically the developer has added new characters and quality of life updates in past games. WithMortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, players can get access to all sorts of new content outside of just the narrative experience. Warner Bros and NetherRealm are treating this like a dedicated expansion pack so as expected, players will need to purchase it upon its release on May 26.

Naturally, NetherRealm is sweetening the deal for players who are willing to pre-order the new content early. The Eternal Klash Skin Pack will be unlocked on Day One for players who pre-order the content early. The Skin Pack includes the Unbound Rage skin for Scorpion based on hisMortal Kombat (2011)look, Son of Arctika Sub-Zero skin which is his Shredder style outfit fromMortal Kombat Deception, and the Kori Power Frost skin, which longtime fans may remember as her original Lin Kuei warrior outfit.
There are multiple ways players can grab this new content early. The Aftermath only expansion can be purchased for $39.99, while the Aftermath and Kombat Pack bundle can be picked up for just ten dollars more at $49.99. This gives players access to the story content and thesix previously released DLC characters. For brand new players or those who want to get back into the game, there’s an all in one Kollection which comes with the base game and all of the paid DLC released so far including Kombat Pack 1 and Aftermath.
In addition to skins and story content, the update is also adding two classic stages, friendships, and a new Kombat Pack which adds fan favorite fighters like Sheeva and Fujin as well as anotherspecial guest character in RoboCop. Considering the size and scope of this update and expansion, it’s unknown if anything more is planned forMortal Kombat 11, putting Ash Williams addition in doubt. Still, fans should expect plenty of tweaks and general game improvements for quite some time as NetherRealm Studios likely starts to transition to its next major game project.
Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermathwill launch on May 26 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
