During an interview with the New York Timex, Cosgrove said that being famous as a teenager can be such a struggle. “When you’re young, you’re so in your own head,” Cosgrove said of McCurdy. “You can’t imagine that people around you are having much harder struggles.” Cosgrove also admitted she didn’t expect McCurdy to have dealt with such pain since she was seen asthe funny one on theiCarlyset. “You don’t expect things like that from the person in the room who’s making everyone laugh,” she added.

Cosgrove and McCurdy starred iniCarlytogether from 2007 to 2012.iCarlywas recently rebooted in 2021, where almost everyone from the original show was brought back, except for McCurdy. Many wondered why McCurdy refused to join her former castmates for a reboot of a successful show that made her plenty of money and could stand to make her more. Well, her memoir definitely put things into perspective. Even though show creator Dan Schneider has no involvement with the reboot, McCurdy has remained steadfast in not wanting to act anymore, and it’s easy to understand why reading her story.

The sad fact of the matter is that most child actors are not well-adjusted because they grew up in an environment of adults instead of children their age. They get large exposure that they are not emotionally mature enough yet to handle, so they turn to alcohol or recreational drugs to ease themselves from that burden. Worse yet is that Hollywood has been exposed for having predators who have sexually abused children. McCurdy dealt with a lot of that herself, so she did not want the trauma she suffered to get any worse. Luckily, McCurdy can say she got out while she had the chance. Other child stars, such as Amanda Bynes, have not.

Her story should demonstrate to kids why it’s not really that glamorous to be a child star in Hollywood. Minus all the attention you get, you start to question if people actually like you or if they are just hanging out with you because of how recognizable you are to the public. Fame can truly warp young minds because they don’t know if they’re being exploited or not. McCurdy had already been through the wringer just getting her name out there in Hollywood, and she smartly left it behind before she became a life that ended in tragedy.
