There are certain phenomena that possess the extraordinary ability to bridge rarely-closed gaps. J.J. Abrams unitedStar TrekandStar Warsfans (briefly, anyway). But what can traverse the crevasse between allegorical video games about giant robots and adorable family movies? That’s whereMetal Gear Solidcreator Hideo Kojima andPaddington 2come in.
The video game auteur recently took to social media to profess his appreciation for something decidedlyunlike the typical Kojima fare. But similar to what one might expect from his productions, the post came out of nowhere and might take some readers a few extra seconds to realize what they just witnessed.

Employing emojis and liberal use of movie posters, Kojima posted a straightforward and glowing endorsement for thebeloved family filmPaddington 2. “The ‘Paddington 2’ movie is a masterpiece👍😍” he stated, supplementing the tweet with several different promotional posters from the film. But just in case anybody thought he was merely making a performative, low-effort declaration, he topped things off with an admittedly precious picture of himself happily posing with a Paddington doll.
It’s not difficult to see why someone, even the intricate mind that developedMetal Gear Solidand revolutionized the stealth genre, would lovePaddington 2so much. The film and its predecessor are essentially the definitions of comfort movies. The kindness and sincerity on display in both films while still maintaining genuine humor come together to feel like a safe space in a world of, well, not that. But the sequel is widely considered to be one of the best films of all time, regardless of the preferences of who’s being asked. That’s no small feat.
ThePaddingtonmovies are, boiled down, the story of a kindhearted talking bear and the uniting effect he has on those around him. He believes that everyone is capable and deserving of kindness, a trait that rubs off on pretty much everyone he meets. As a result, the humor never punches down and proves that one doesn’t need to resort to offensive comments like transphobia (like Dave Chapelle) and similar ideas spouted by controversial comedians just to get a laugh.
While there are still things to be said about some of Kojima’s themes and the designs featured in his games, especially those involving women, posts like this really seem to indicate that he genuinely values kindness and fairness as shown in thePaddingtonmovies. They’re a couple of purely lovable pieces of media, and their ability to unite unlikely people in their views shouldn’t be understated. Now, how about aPaddingtonoutfit in Kojima’s next game, eh?
