Fans ofMass Effecthave enjoyed revisiting the original trilogy withMass Effect: Legendary Edition. With plenty of updated features and a graphical overhaul,Mass Effecthas never looked or played better. Some less than straightforward features, however, still managed to make it into the remastered trilogy untouched and some things were changed to be even more of a hassle.
Removing Commander Shepard’s helmet is simple and the option is easy to find in theMass Effect 1remaster but inMass Effect 2, the option is nowhere to be seen in the menus. Previously, all the player had to do was navigate to the “Squad” section of the menu and remove or add it by hitting the right bumper. This option seemingly disappears forMass Effect 2inMass Effect: Legendary Edition.

Removing Shepard’s Helmet in Mass Effect 2
It’s always a shame when a player spends plenty of time changing the minute details of their customizable character’s face only for it to be covered by a helmet for the majority of the game. Because each individual player’s Commander Shepard might look different, it’s important for many to be able to see the character they made.Removing Shepard’s helmet inMass Effect 2is possible, however, taking it off removes any and all armor bonuses related to having it equipped and it can’t be done on the fly.
To remove it inMass Effect: Legendary Edition, head to Shepard’s private quarters in the Normandy SR-2. Their room should be located on the very top level of the ship. Enter the Captain’s Cabin and look around for the Armor Locker. After interacting with it, Shepard should be able to toggle through different helmets and customize the look of their armor. If the player doesn’t want to wear their helmet, set the slider all the way to the left for “none.“Mass Effect 2’s armor rating is done differently thanMass Effect 1’sbecause it gives armor values to each individual piece. It’s important to note that if Shepard’s helmet is removed, they lose all armor bonuses associated with wearing a helmet.
Fans ofthe originalMass Effect 2might note that this feature hasn’t been changed forMass Effect: Legendary Edition. It’s a little odd that a helmet toggle button wasn’t added to the menus for those looking to remove it without consequence for important cutscenes and put it back on for combat. What’s more, as stated above, toggling it during missions and on different planets is still an available option inMass Effect 1in the remaster. There may be a fix coming for this in the future, however, its inclusion seems to be deliberate and not a part of a bug so it doesn’t seem likely that a change is coming.
Mass Effect: Legendary Editionis available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
