Mushroom Heartlesswere unique enemiesin the originalKingdom Heartsas they were typically non-hostile towards you, except for the Black Fungus. These unusual enemies appeared inKingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix, and they are all wearing the signature black cloaks used by Organization XIII and are known as Mushroom XIII.

Just like with their earlier appearances, the Mushroom XIII act more like puzzles than actual combat encounters. Completing each mini-game offered by each member of Mushroom XIII is required for the secret ending added inKingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix,so here is how you can overcome their trials.

kingdom hearts 2 final mix - encountering mushroom 1

Mushroom 1

The first mushroom can be found at Memory’s Skyscraper in The World That Never Was. to successfully complete its trial, you must hit it 70 times from behind within 30 seconds. In order to do this, you will need to use the Reaction Commands. Use Reversal and then use Quick Slide when it appears. If timed correctly, the mushroom will pause and look around in confusion. This gives you a few seconds to land as many hits on it as you can. This can be accomplished byusing Final Form.

Try to avoid button mashing the Reaction Command button, as this can cause you to miss Quick Slide and waste precious seconds. If you attack the mushroom while it is facing you, it will unleash a counter attack.

If you see a firework appear over the head of a mushroom at the end of a mini-game, that means that you have succesfully met the criteria for that challenge.

Mushroom 2

The second mushroom is at theChristmas Tree Plaza in Halloween Town. To successfully complete this challenge, you will need to block 80 points worth of projectile attacks that the mushroom will throw at you. While most shots can be blocked and sent back by using Guard, it is better to use Reflega. Make sure to have some Ether or Elixirs ready if you run out of MP.

Mushroom 3

The third mushroom is on the bridge at Beast’s Castle, where you fought Xaldin. This mini-game requires you to gather 450 orbs that the mushroom will drop as it flies around. Make sure to equip Draw if you have that ability, and also use the Follow the Wind keyblade. Having Glide fully upgraded is recommended, as it makes it easier to keep up with the mushroom as it flies around.

Mushroom 4

The fourth mushroom waits for you at the Palace Gates in The Land of Dragons. The challenge here is to defeat 85 mushrooms without getting hit yourself. The best way to do this is to use Wisdom Form, but ensure it is fully leveled up first, so that you have as much time in that form as possible. Keep your distance, and you should have little trouble completing this challenge. Just make sure to keep moving, as the mushrooms will spawn faster the more you kill.

Mushroom 5

The fifth mushroom is in the Treasure Room, which is at the depths of the Cave of Wonders in Agrabah. To beat this challenge, you must defeat the mushroom within 10 seconds. The mushroom will also rapidly heal any damage that it takes, which means you will want to do this one once you are max level and have your stats as high as possible so that you may out damage this healing. Using Limit Form can help you kill it quickly.

Mushroom 6

The sixth mushroom is in the Underworld in the Atrium where you first encountered Demyx. The challenge of this mushroom is to defeat all the mushrooms that appear within 45 seconds. The best way to do this is to use Final Form, so verify it is fully upgraded. Having some Ethers/Elixirs on hand is a good idea as well, as using Thundaga can help kill groups quickly without wasting time flying over to them.

Mushroom 7

The seventh mushroom is lurking in the Tunnelway in Twilight Town. The objective here is to defeat the mushroom within 10 seconds. While this may sound similiar to the fifth mushroom, the twist here is that if you are hit you are sent flying back. Using Thundaga while in Final Form or using Wisdom Form are effective strategies for this mushroom. Just make sure not to let it get close to you.

Mushroom 8

The eighth mushroom can be found outside of Yen Sid’s Tower. This challenge requires you to hit the mushroom 85 times without it landing even once. One effective strategy is to equip Horizontal Slash and Berserk Charge. Using these two abilities together can make it much easier to keep the mushroom in the air.

Mushroom 9

The ninth mushroom awaits at the Castle Gates in Radiant Garden (formerly known as Hallow Bastion) at the spot where you encountered Demyx. To beat this mushroom, you must make it spin 75 times without stopping even once. Equipping Finishing Plus and Negative Combo can help out here, along with using Wisdom Form. Keep attacking while going in a circle around the mushroom.

Mushroom 10

The tenth mushroom is on Isla De Muerta in Port Royal. You have to find and defeat the real mushroom within 55 seconds. The real mushroom will make a gesture before it and its clones start flying all over the place. Carefully position yourself so that you can see where all the mushrooms are moving and then attack the correct one when they stop moving.

Mushroom 11

The eleventh mushroom is at the Waterwayin the Timeless River. You have to deplete the number above the mushroom’s head within 19 seconds or less to complete this challenge. Wisdom Form combined with Negative Combo and the Rumbling Rose. The key to completing this challenge is to be ready for when the mushroom jumps, as any attack you shoot at it will miss if you don’t adjust your position accordingly.

Mushroom 12

The twelfth mushroom can be found outside the mansion in Twilight Town. To complete its challenge, you must defeat at least 40 mushrooms within a minute. Wisdom Form will work wonders here, but you will need to be mindful of the broken pillars that the mushrooms will use as cover.

Mushroom 13

The final mushroom only appears once you’ve completed all 12 challenges. Go to where you fought 1,000heartlessand the mushrooms will appear. A pillar of light will shine down, and you will see a “Look Up” prompt when you approach it. The thirteenth and final mushroom will descend and will grant you theWinner’s Proof keyblade. You will also get the Mushroom Master achievement/trophy.
