Beginning life when PC gaming was still in its infancy, the originalDoomis often held aloft as the poster child for first-person, high octane action. Even to this day, it’s still inspiringa slew of retro-based FPS gamesthat owe a debt to the classic shooter. On top of that, id Software’s original titles have been the subject of many experimental mods over the decades, some of which alter the game almost entirely. But this latest mod adds one element that seems to have been missing this whole time.

A modder by the name of edy pagaza has recently uploaded a video to YouTube which shows a trailer for an upcomingDoommod, and it looks utterly insane. Referred to as “Doom Shinobi,” it pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin, in that it puts the players in the shoes of a ninja who is tasked with ridding the depths of hell from the pixelated demons. That’s right, it basically turns the originalDoominto aNinja Gaiden-style action game.

The trailer shows off the kind of maddening action that players will be experiencing once the mod comes out. Accompanied by a heart-pounding soundtrack, the protagonist slices and dices through imps and gunners, hacking away, throwing stars at Cacodemons, and engaging in feats of acrobatics that are associated with the elite skills of a ninja. There are a lot ofinteresting and game-changing mods forDoomout there, but this could be the first time that someone has thought to combine the granddaddy of FPS games with violent martial arts.

There’s not a lot of information aboutDoom Shinobi, but then there’s probably not much that needs to be told. The brief teaser pretty much says everything about it. It’s also expected to be out on February 13 though there doesn’t appear to be any link to a download page just yet.Doomis easily one of the best FPS games of the 1990s, if not of all time. The fact that fans are still making insane mods for it shows just how much it’s stood the test of time.

Even the original’s co-creatorJohn Romero is still working onDoommods. For a game that came out almost 30 years ago, it’s fantastic to see that the community, and evidently the ex-developers themselves, are still engaged and helping to keep the classic alive. Edy pagaza’sDoom Shinobiis just one other exciting way that the fan base keeps experimenting with this influential title.

The originalDoomcame out in 1993 and is available on numerous systems.
