When it comes to how realistic or aesthetically pleasing games are, fans will all have subjective opinions on what they believe looks best. However, clear graphical overhauls are evident when fans look at new technological advances as each console generation is one-upped by a new platform with more advanced hardware, such asthe PS5’s numerous technological achievements over PS4.
A lot of times, these improvements within individual games are determined by the particular engine that a developer uses.Marvel’s Spider-Man, for example, has been capable of achieving exceptional feats of graphical fidelity on Insomniac Games’s own proprietary engine. But as Unreal Engine 5 gradually begins to demonstrate how authentic and immersive environments can be, a fan has moddedMarvel’s Spider-Man’s titular character intothe Unreal Engine 5 tech demo used forThe Matrix Awakens.

With a lot of hats in the mix for who was responsible for what, YouTubers Menterial and Lewis Fiford are credited for its creation, and has been shared by YouTuber ‘dwr’ since. Fiford’s Spider-Man character model comes fromMarvel’s Spider-Man, but as a mod it lacks the same animation polish as Spider-Man traversesThe Matrix Awakens' demo. It is incredible nonetheless to witness whatMarvel’s Spider-Manwould look like on Unreal Engine 5 with improved textures in New York City’s open-world environments.
The Matrix Awakens' Unreal Engine 5 tech demo has been a hot-button item lately with many impressive mods. One mod in particular resurfaced the debate overwhether an open-world Superman game would be viable on Unreal Engine 5with a well-animated flight system. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the tech demo is how many opportunities there are for future titles that do choose to take advantage of Unreal Engine 5, which so far has demonstrated a life-like immersion in its graphical fidelity and how realistically it can render character models or environments.
Marvel’s Spider-Manwas remastered onto PS5 in association withMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Recently,Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moralesreceived a patch for VRR support, as did all of Insomniac’s titles on PS5. It may be difficult to make Insomniac’s titles look even better than they already can, but the tech demo’s mod proves that environmental textures could become even more authentic.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moralescan now achieve a 120Hz refresh rate at over 100FPS, which improves upon an already impressive performance ray-tracing mode at 60FPS and a fidelity mode that can now reach 40FPS. It is unclear which titles may make the leap to Unreal Engine 5 in the future and at what point, but Insomniac continues to prove that its engine excels on any associable platform in the meantime.
Marvel’s Spider-Manis available now on PS4 and PS5.
