Avowedis one of the most popular upcoming projects that is set to come to the Xbox platform. First announced at the Xbox Showcase in 2020, eager fans have kept their ears to the ground for any updates on the title ever since.
The recent Xbox Showcase on June 11 did not shy away fromAvowed, detailing a lot of core information about the game. Quite crucially, the showcase gave fans a glimpse ofAvowed’s combat system. The core nature ofAvowedhas long seen it be compared to RPG titans such asThe Elder Scrolls, and comparisons can finally be made between the combat of the release andSkyrim’s.

The Combat System of Avowed
From the very outset ofAvowed’s reveal, it was clear that the game was going to cover the core dynamics of RPG combat married to a first-person perspective. The earliest images of the game showed the player character engaging in bladed combat, indicating a range of handheld fantastical weapons within the game. As well as this, it was confirmed early on thatAvowedwould contain magic-based combat, giving players a wide level of choice in how they tackle their foes.
It is clear to see in this way where the comparisons betweenAvowedand the likes ofSkyrimcame from. However, the recent Xbox Showcase gave a true insight into just how uniqueAvowed’s combat is set to be. Many were shocked at the Xbox Showcase’s reveal thatAvowedwill contain gunplay as a part of its core experience. In place of the ranged combat of traditional fantasy RPGs that feature bows and arrows,Avowedinstead boasts a range of pistols that the player can wield in-game.

Combat inAvowedwill also see players mix and match between a wide assortment of blades, shields, spells, and pistols to tackle enemy threats. The title is clearly priding itself on this range of possibilities, yet the similarities it shares withSkyrim’s combat are still clear to see.
Skyrim’s Combat System and Avowed
LikeSkyrim, blade- and magic-based combat are a huge part ofAvowed’s core combat. Both titles possess avariety of melee weapons including two-handed weapons, with the melee combat ofAvowedlikely being very similar toSkyrim’s. The magic system ofAvowedalso seems to be greatly inspired bySkyrimandThe Elder Scrolls. Spells are cast from the player’s hand inAvowedmuch likeSkyrim, with there being a wide range of spells to explore.
Of course, it appears thatAvowedwill not possess the same kind ofranged combat asSkyrim, with the game’s guns being the greatest deviation fromSkyrim’s combat formula of bows. However, the depth of weapon variety thatAvowedcontains could potentially line up well withSkyrim’s own variety, and likely fosters a range of builds that players can choose from and develop.
AsAvowed’s pistols appear to be one-handed, players can potentially combine them with melee weapons or even magic. This is a huge change fromthe combat ofSkyrim, where the two-handed nature of bows prohibits players from casting spells or using melee weapons. In this way,Avowed’s combat could be much more varied thanSkyrim’s.
It remains to be seen whetherAvowed’s magic will be as in-depth asSkyrim’s, but the level of customization within the game already seems to beat the 2011 title. While a lot ofAvowed’s core melee and magic combat is similar toSkyrim’s, its gunplay and mix-and-match qualities offer a truly unique perspective on fantasy RPG engagements.
Avowedwill release in 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
