Though Aloy has a fiercely independent personality, she also has an inseverable tie to Dr. Elisabet Sobeck. They share the same DNA because Aloy is her clone, and in many ways, Aloy’s ultimate goal in life is to finish what Elisabet started. Despite the tight bond the two share, Aloy frequently discovers that she doesn’t know as much about her ancestor as she believes, and there are frequent shocking revelations in bothHorizon Zero DawnandHorizon Forbidden West. This is a trend that should continue, and the next game should have Aloy making more unexpected discoveries about the great scientist.
InHorizon Forbidden West, many of the revelations about Elisabet came through Beta and Tilda van der Meer. Further discoveries could be made through Beta, who is also Elisabet’s clone and captures another side of the scientist’s personality. Aloy must learn about Elisabet because, in a way, she also learns about herself in the process.

Aloy is More Than Just a Clone of Horizon’s Elisabet Sobeck
Aloy learns that she is a clone inHorizon Zero Dawn, and at first, the discovery enrages her. She believes she is just some kind of tool created to achieve a goal. However, she later understands that beingHorizon’s Dr. Elisabet Sobeck’s clone makes her a very special person because the scientist was a great individual that believed in humankind in the darkest of times. She was the genius behind GAIA, the AI that is responsible for life on Earth not being exterminated for good.
As Aloy uncovers,Project Zero Dawnwas almost a failure, but Dr. Sobeck’s sacrifice saved the day. When it is discovered that the GAIA Prime facility was not sealed properly, Dr. Sobeck realized that the Faro machines would find the facility if the error wasn’t fixed. Hence, she left the facility to make the repair, knowing that it would also spell her end. From this, Aloy learns that there are things that are more important than brains and self-preservation.

Elisabet Sobeck’s Love Affairs
InHorizon Forbidden West, players learn details about Dr. Sobeck that turn her into a much more multidimensional character. The Far Zeniths, a group of humans that fled to the Sirius colony during the Faro Plague, return to Earth, allowing Aloy to meetTilda van der Meer. She presents herself as an ally, and she reveals that she was Dr. Sobeck’s romantic partner. Things did not last long, and this is not surprising, as the two have very different values. While Dr. Sobeck has self-abnegation and is willing to do anything for Earth, Tilda wants to leave for greener pastures.
As Aloy discovers, Dr. Sobeck’s life wasn’t just about Project Zero Dawn, and she did have time for love. However, she was still principled, and whenHorizon’s Dr. Sobeck had to choose between Earth and Tilda, she went with the former. The nextHorizongame should continue this process of unraveling Dr. Sobeck, as she is one of the most important characters in the series. Delving further into the scientist’s romantic side could also segue into the series eventually exploring Aloy’s romantic side if she has one.
Just because Aloy is the scientist’s clone, it doesn’t mean she will perfectly emulate her personality. As Beta demonstrates, the environment also plays a huge role in how a person turns out. Hence, it may be necessary for thenextHorizongameto also explore a bit more about Dr. Sobeck’s upbringing and influences.
