The February 2021 Nintendo Direct included a number of announcements for first-party Nintendo games coming to Switch, including anHD remaster ofThe Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,Mario Golf: Super Rush, andSplatoon 3. However, it also featured plenty of news for fans of third-party developers and indie studios, with Supergiant Games’Hadesrevealing a physical edition will be available for Switch soon.
Hadesalmost doesn’t need an introduction, as the indie dungeon-crawling roguelike exploded in popularity after it released out of Early Access last year and received plenty ofaccolades at The Game Awards 2020as well as other major awards shows. Because the game supplements its gameplay loop with an extensive story, many have enjoyedHadesfor hours on end, but the new physical release comes with extra goodies.

On March 19, fans will be able to purchase a physical copy ofHadesfor Switch that comes with a digital-download code for the game’s soundtrack, including two-and-a-half hours of music; as well as a character compendium booklet that displays all the in-game portraits. Given many indie developers turn to companies such as Limited Run Games or Fangamer to bring their titles into the physical realm via special Collector’s Edition sets, it is nice to see Supergiant’s work come through more official channels after its successful launch.
WhileHadesis currently only available on Switch and PC through storefronts like the Epic Games Store and Steam, fans have taken it upon themselves to extend the game’s reach. For example, oneHadesfan built a custom arcade cabinetfor the indie title that features a lot of the artwork players can see in the booklet included with this new physical release. There are currently no announced plans to port the game to other consoles, however.
Another popular indie game released in 2020 also received attention during the Nintendo Direct presentation, with Nintendo announcing thatMediatonic’sFall Guys: Ultimate Knockoutis coming to Switchthis summer. As solid single-player and multiplayer offerings respectively,HadesandFall Guysshould fit well on the hybrid console alongside other titles likeNo More Heroes 3- which also received an August 27 release date today.
With Hades' popularity leading to an excess amount of fan attention through things such ascrossover art with games likeAnimal Crossing, it will be interesting to see how a physical release does for Supergiant Games. Those who already own the game and don’t want to give it a second pass can also look forward to more releasing on Switch next month, including Capcom’sMonster Hunter Rise.
