Summary

Even thoughHades 2was announced at the Game Awards in December, there hasn’t been much information since. In four months, it will have been a year since the sequel was confirmed. However, people should expect news aboutHades 2relatively soon since it’s meant to have an early access period on PC before it properly launches.

The predecessor toHades 2was incredibly well-received during its early access period in 2018. It sold over a million copies in under two years, according to the studio. Excitingly, with progress being made on the roguelike dungeon crawler, important barriers are about to be broken for its developer.

Hades 2 is Already A Monumental Milestone

Despite the sequel being unreleased, the developers have a right to be proud ofHades 2already. If all goes according to plan,Hades 2will be Supergiant Games' first sequel, ever. This may come as surprising news since the studio is also home to acclaimed games such asBastion,Pyre, andTransistor.

Hades 2is the first to break the previous constraints of past games. Thankfully, it seems the team behind it is eager to return to the Greek mythology-inspired world in spite of acknowledging that the studio purposefully hasn’t made sequels. Still, the story should be as interesting as ever now that Zagreus' journey has found its end, and it’s been said thatHades 2is a direct sequel to the original. Zagreus' sister, Melinoe, will be taking up the mantle to fight Chronos, the Titan of Time and King of the Titans.

Of course, there are those that have wondered if the renewal of theHadesfranchise means that Supergiant will return to its other IPs as well. ThoughHadeswas a smashing success, its predecessors were admired too. Plus, while the other games were released years beforeHades, it may not be too late to consider making new entries.

Supergiant Games was established in 2009, and its first game wasthe ARPGBastionin 2011which featured a mysterious reactive narrator and an event called “The Calamity”.Bastioncould find a way to make a sequel because it’s suggested that “The Calamity” and restoration are cyclical. That is unless players choose the “evacuation” ending in a highly conflicting moral decision.

Interestingly, some have likened the 2011 title to the 2014 gameTransistor. When it first came out,Transistorwas called an “evolved” version ofBastion. Supergiant Creative Director Greg Kasavin referenced aBastionsequel in the past, by saying that the team “wanted to make something new”.Transistoris built upon the foundations of Bastion, but this game has more complex combat. Unfortunately, the protagonist’s fate is very much sealed at the end ofTransistorand might make this one Supergiant game that doesn’t need a follow-up.

On the other hand,Pyrewas considered one of the best indie gamesin 2017 with “generally positive reviews”. It maintains a deep lore but doesn’t have as tight of a narrative as the previous two games. In a way, some considerHadesto be a surrogate sequel with its kindred storytelling method.Pyre’s ending is also quite final, but it has potential for a prequel if the developer wanted to explore how the Commonwealth government became tyrannical. It could even expand on Volfred and Oralech’s relationship among the Nightwings.

Regardless,Hades 2is a colossal break in tradition for Supergiant Games. The studio wrote on its FAQ page that it wants to “recapture the sense of wonder and delight of its predecessor”, which is one of the reasons its past games haven’t received follow-ups. However, this studio is known for putting in countless hours to its work, so it’s likelyHades 2will be a satisfying adventure.

Hades 2is currently in development.
