Vault 79 is located in the Savage Divide area of Appalachia inFallout 76. Before the Great War, all gold bullion from Fort Knox was transferred to Vault 79 by the government to keep it safe. The plan was to use this gold bullion to rebuild America should the need arise.
However, that never happened, and now you may loot this gold bullion, which you cansell to vendors in Appalachiawith the help of aRaidersor Settlers faction. However, the choice isn’t easy, since the game doesn’t tell you what will happen to the other faction you don’t choose. Here’s whether you should raid Vault 79 with the Raiders or Settlers and what happens based on your choice.

Should You Raid Vault 79 With Raiders or Settlers in Fallout 76?
It’s crucial to understand that you have the freedom to complete all missions for both the Raiders and Settlers until you receive the ‘Side with Crater’ and ‘Side with Foundation’ quests. Finishing all missions before committing to a side is a strategic move. It makes your reputation grind easier and grants valuable rewards, such as a Chinese Stealth Suit and a couple of Recipes. For instance, aligning with the Raiders unlocks theAmmo machine, while the Settlers offer theFertilizer machine.
When the game makes you choose between the two quests, this marks the point of no return, where you must decide if you want to raid Vault 79 with the Raiders or Settlers inFallout 76. The quest you did not pick will automatically fail in your quest log and the game will tell you that you cannot change your mind once done.

After choosing either faction, the only real thing is how your reputation will shift based on your choice. you’re able to still improve your standing on either side and do dailies for them (just not the actual raid of Vault 79 itself).
Still, we recommend you raid Vault 79 with the Raiders for multiple reasons. First, you will unlock the Slug Busters, a powerful energy weapon below the Enclave Plasma Rifle. Then, when given a choice, choose to split the gold instead of stealing it all sincefarming gold and treasury notesinFallout 76are much more manageable than grinding reputation. Choosing to split the gold evenly will help cut down on the reputation grind with the settlers and allow you to get unique outfits from both factions. As a bonus tip, you may continually give soup to the Settler in theWhitespring Refugeand complete the Eviction Notice public event to help improve your reputation even further.
