Marvel’s Spider-Manset up a story revolving around Peter Parker that rivals many of his biggest stories in the comics. The game gave longtime fans of the wall-crawler an adaptation that was more seasoned, with more time under his belt and a wealth of gadgets at his disposal.Marvel’s Spider-Manalso took some of Spidey’s most treasured villains and put a refreshing spin on a handful of them, with Doc Ock being the standout villain to get a reworked origin. And to top it all off, the game set up the sequel by teasing perhaps one of Spider-Man’s most popular villains of all time: Venom.

Just as the game did something different with Doc Ock, the team at Insomniac seems to be doing something new with Venom. The symbiote was teased by way of Peter Parker’s best friend, Harry Osborn, as players discovered at the end of the game that he’s being held in stasis with some kind of Venom-like substance covering his body. While this is almost certainly alluding to Venom appearing inMarvel’s Spider-Man2, it could bea very different interpretation than what fans are used to. The comics have given fans many versions of Venom over the years, so it’s possible the game will look to them for inspiration.

Classic Venom

The safest route thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2could go with its interpretation of Venom is making him as close to the classic version as possible. There is already some deviation in the fact that it seems Venom won’t be Eddie Brock like usual, butthe symbiote’s characterizationcould still be familiar enough. This version is one of the most monstrous, lurking in the shadows to attack Spider-Man and bringing out the very worst in its host. It’s the Venom that many fans know and love, so it would likely be received very well in-game.

She-Venom

This version of Venom is not one that has been touched on in the comics very much, even less so in any other form of media. In the comics, She-Venom is Eddie Brock’s wife Anne Weying. She gets the symbiote because Eddie gave it to her after she was attacked by thugs, and after that she only gets it again when Eddie forces it upon her. It might be a bit of a stretch forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, but if the game were to introduce this version it could probably use Mary Jane Watson as the host. It might not get much mileage in the game’s overall story, but it could be a nice reference at the very least.

Anti-Venom

Anti-Venom is one of the biggest deviations fromthe usual Venom character, because this one actually wants to do good. This version comes from a time when Eddie Brock reconnected with the Venom symbiote after suffering from cancer, and this time the symbiote attached to his white blood cells.Marvel’s Spider-Man 2might be able to introduce it as a way of helping Harry Osborn disconnect from the Venom symbiote.

Agent Venom

While it may take some big narrative steps to introduce Agent Venom, there’s no doubting how cool it would be if this version showed up. The difficulty in bringing in Agent Venom comes from the fact that his origin is tied to Flash Thompson,Peter Parker’s high school bully turned soldier. IfMarvel’s Spider-Man 2makes Venom a more tactical threat rather than a monster-like figure, then it’s possible he could make some kind of appearance. The way it looks now however, this seems unlikely.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has been one of Marvel’s most anticipated games ever since the first one released, and a large part of that is due to its Venom setup. There seems to be some reasoning behindwhyMarvel’s Spider-Mandidn’t introduce Venom outright, and it’s probably been the safest decision that’s been made with this emerging franchise so far. A lot of fans cling to Venom as their most beloved Spider-Man villain, so Insomniac likely wants to give him the introduction he deserves.
