Summary

Dragon Ball Superis a series that is famous for itstransformations and power-upsand the sheer amount of these in the series is often parodied in other anime and forms of media. While this is pretty funny to see, the relevance of these forms to the story and the shonen anime genre cannot be ignored, because as the series goes on and characters show up that are vastly more powerful than the ones before them, the heroes require something more within themselves to beat them. And, Broly is no exception.

The officialDragon Ball Supermanga sits at a very interesting place right now. This is because the power-ups that the heroes have started to receive are incredibly powerful, however, they are now using techniques and are looking more to refine them instead of just unlocking new forms which allow them to fight with newer and more different opponents than ever before.Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Piccolohave all received new and very powerful forms/techniques that bring them to godly levels of power, but Broly has not received a new form after his Legendary Super Saiyan that we last saw in theDragon Ball Super: Brolymovie.

Does Broly Need a New Form?

When we last saw Broly in action, he was unstoppable and was seen as a threat to the entire universe. Neither Goku nor Vegeta were able to defeat him on their own, even in their strongest forms(bar Ultra Instinct) and so, had to resort to the legendary Fusion technique to finally put a stop to Broly. However, many fans sometimes forget that even while Gogeta was in his base form, Broly was still able to hold his own. Broly was able to keep up with Gogeta and even managed to get a couple of hits in, due to which Gogeta eventually had to go into his own Super Saiyan form to better deal with him.

Even after gaining far greater strength and speed, Broly was durable enough to not get instantlyobliterated by the Fusion. Keep in mind that at this point, Broly was only in his first Super Saiyan form himself and had even more to give. Eventually, Broly transformed into his LSS form and was strong enough to cause Gogeta to go Blue, after which the fight was very one-sided. However, It should be noted that these 2 were powerful enough to throw energy beams that destroyed reality and thrust them into a void where they were the only beings present and nothing else existed.

This feat of strength is one that we have never seen before in all ofDragon Balland is far greater than things that we have seen from evenGods of Destructionas the sheer power of their Ki blasts was able to shatter dimensional barriers, something that even Whis and the other Angels have not shown to have any knowledge about. Destroying a planet or even a galaxy is one thing, but to tear down the walls of reality itself easily puts Broly into the very top tier of strength inDragon Ball.

While it was never explicitly shown in the anime or the manga about how Goku’s Ultra Instinct would fare against Broly, it is fair to assume that Broly would come out stronger. The Legendary Super Saiyanform allows Broly to go up against Gogeta, a being that is the amalgamation of all the powers and strengths of both Goku and Vegeta, so Broly’s limitless potential would perhaps be able to defeat the technique. Despite being a divine technique of the Angels, we’ve seen in the past two manga arcs that Ultra Instinct isn’t a perfect technique for mortals yet as Goku still took damage while using it, so Broly eventually growing far too strong for the technique is only a matter of time.

As is the case with Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, both Goku and Vegeta areseeking to refine their formsto make the best use of these divine techniques instead of just unlocking new forms in each arc to take down more powerful enemies. This is a far better narrative decision and is a path that Broly seems to be going down as well. In bothDragon Ball Super: Super Heroand theDragon Ball Supermanga, we see the 3 Saiyans undergoing training on Beerus' planet. Not only is this training for Goku and Vegeta to refine their techniques and styles but also for Broly to learn so he can better understand his latent power and notlose himself to rage. In Chapter 93 of the manga, Vegeta and Goku undergo a sparring match which Broly observes to learn how he can best utilize his power so, the main theme of refinement of power and techniques remains potent for Broly. If he can perfectly utilize his energy and Ki, he will never need to unlock a new form for his power.

What Could His New Form Be?

However, ifDragon Ball Superwants to go down the road of having Broly unlock new forms as a way of reaching even greater heights of strength, then there should be a proper way this should be done. One of the biggest critiques of theDragon Ballfranchise is that of transformations and how all the ones in the canon series are nothing more than simplerecolors of the characters' hair. While this is not the case for every single canon transformation, the simple hair recolor is something that many fans are against as it just shows lazy design choices.

The perfect next transformation for Broly could be the official, canon introduction of the widely belovedSuper Saiyan 4 transformationthat made its debut inDragon Ball GT. When the series came out, many fans of the franchise found it to be very underwhelming and riddled with flaws that brought down the overall viewing experience. However, one thing that a vast majority of fans loved was the iconic Super Saiyan 4 transformation. Everyone was completely enamored by the incredible design and the extremely imposing look that the form had and most of all, it seemed like the proper next step for the natural progression of Saiyan transformations as the forms, starting from SS1, started to progressively get awilder and more animalistic look.

This works very well for Broly and serves as the perfect entry point to bring many fans' favorite aspects ofGTinto the canon story. The reason why this is the perfect next step for Broly is that it not only suits him and his style as a fighter but also because it is perfectly in line with the themes regarding transformations that the story is going for right now. Ever sinceVegeta paved the way for unique transformationsin the story, fans have been wondering what may be next for Broly, and the SS4 is where his roots and story as a Saiyan would be the best fit.

Broly has always been an exceptionally powerful Saiyan and this has been an aspect of his character since his unmatched potential caused him to be cast out from his planet. In his fights with Goku, Vegeta and Gogeta, Broly was shown to be an absolute monster that was all about brute force and power, much like the Oozaru form that the Saiyan race used to wreak havoc on the universe. Moreover, much like the Oozaru, Broly was an unstoppable, rampaging monster that could not be stopped when he was enraged, so thematically the form is perfect for him in that regard as well.

It is a form that allows Broly to embrace his Saiyan roots and is also something that serves his story very well as it would allow him to embrace theSaiyan race within him, the same race that brutally cast him aside over superstition, turning him into a terrible monster when it could have all been avoided. Despite Broly being a largely beloved character that most fans of the series adore, he has not gotten much character development so to see him undergo such an inner struggle to achieve this form would be well worth it. Even though a Super Saiyan 3 version of LSS Broly with long hair would also look very cool, the introduction of SS4 within the series would make fans go nuts by tying in the best part ofDragon Ball GTinto the story.

While Broly is a great character that has finally been introduced into the canon of Dragon Ball, there is still a great amount of potential that he holds for where he can go next in terms of his story and his transformations. While he doesn’t need a new form going forward due to the strength in his LSS form being incredibly powerful, theintroduction of the SS4 formwould be very good for him thematically, as well as fitting into where the story is going with transformations in general. Since every heavy hitter on the roster of the Z-Fighters is getting new and powerful character-specific transformations that are very different from what the series has given us before, it would be great to see Broly rocking the Super Saiyan 4.
