Akira Toriyama’sDragon Ballturned anime into an international phenomenon. While not a solo effort,DBZ’s reach was unprecedented, and the show left an undeniable mark on Latin America and parts of Europe, along with enjoying a strong presence in most other parts of the world. Sure, nowadays, anime is readily accessible thanks to services like Crunchyroll, but that was not the case duringDragon Ball’sheyday. No, people had to tune in daily to experience the continuing adventures of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and the rest of the Z-Fighters.DBZ(and its predecessor andGT) became part of everyday life. It was great.
Toriyama’s original manga ended in 1995, and the anime soon followed suit.Dragon Ball GTkept things going for a while longer, andKaibroughtZback in the form of a streamlined remake. While both of those releases have their positives,Dragon Ball Supermarked the franchise’s full-blown return, building on two successful movies to craft a new long-running manga and anime series. The former is still going strong, while the latter ended its run at 131 episodes and two subsequent features. Although divisive compared toDBZ,Superis still packed to the brim with great fights, particularly during the anime’s final arc. The characters are mostly fun too, and all the familiar faces are joined by a few new ones.
Let’s highlight theages and heights ofDragon Ball Super’s main characters.

Goku
The Legendary Protagonist
GokuisDragon Ball. That might sound reductive, but he is almost certainly the first character who will pop into most people’s minds when they think of Akira Toriyama’s series. Honestly, he might be the first character people imagine when they think of anime in general. Kakarot is just that big of a deal. Debuting during the mid-80s and leading the charge inDragon Ball,DBZ,Dragon Ball GT,Super, andDaima, Goku has been a pop-culture icon for roughly four decades. He is a legend.
Goku also gets quite a bit of flack, especially his depiction inSuper. Obsessed with training, fighting, and growing stronger, his Saiyan drive means he often has blinkers on, preferring to just chase after his inherent desires rather than trying to be anything more. While not one-dimensional, Goku is pretty simple for a character who has been around for so long, and he can seem like he has regressed inSuper.
Admittedly, this is partially because many people grew up withdubbed interpretationsofDBZ, which were not 100% identical to the Japanese original. For example, the English iteration presents Goku as a more conventional hero, which might not completely gel with the more immature version inSuper.
Goku’s Best Moment(s) In Dragon Ball Super
Goku is arguably not at his best inDragon Ball Super, with his portrayal attracting more criticism than in older shows. That said, Kakarot still gets plenty of opportunities to shine, largely revolving around transformations. InSuper,Goku goes Super Saiyan God, Blue, Blue Kaio-ken, and, finally, Ultra Instinct(in two forms). While all these reveal scenes are fun, the proper introduction of Ultra Instinct Sign is Goku’s highest point in the anime, especially since it is followed by a pretty great fight.
Honorable mention: Goku explodes in anger when Goku Black/Zamasu reveals he killed Chi-Chi and Goten.
Vegeta
A Fellow Saiyan And Goku’s Rival
Introduced as a villain who does not hesitate to destroy planets,Vegetahas come a long way since he first showed up on Earth in search of a Kakarot to put in his place. Sure, he still has a temper and tries to avoid showing any affection in public like atrue tsundere, but he clearly loves his wife, Bulma, and his children, Trunks and (eventually) Bulla. Who could have predicted that The Saiyan Prince would become such a great family man? He was even prepared to reject fighting in the Tournament of Power to stay with his family, and only relented when he realized the stakes that were on the line.
To be clear, Vegeta has hardly rejected his Saiyan genes. He still spends most of his time training and is nearly always up for a good fight, be it against Kakarot or antagonists like Golden Frieza or Goku Black. He still wants to become stronger and push himself beyond his current limits; however, he nowadays has a genuine motive driving him forward rather than just a desire to surpass Goku.
Vegeta develops a surprisingly charming mentor-student dynamic with Cabba, a Universe 6 Saiyan. Vegeta is intrigued by the idea that, in another universe, the Saiyan race not only survived but also prospered, to the point of becoming peacekeepers in the process. However, he is annoyed by Cabba’s lack of drive and refusal to connect with his anger, which Vegeta believes is what makes Saiyans strong. Consequently, he pushes Cabba, all in the hopes of teaching him a lesson.
Vegeta’s Best Moment(s) In Dragon Ball Super
Vegeta’s two best moments inDragon Ball Superbookend the show. The anime’s God of Destruction Beerus Saga initially depicts Vegeta at arguably his worst, with the Saiyan Prince acting fairly out-of-character to try to keep the deity happy.
However, once Beerus lays his hands on Bulma, Vegeta loses it, a moment that demonstrates his transition into a family man who adores his wife (and kids). While he does not present much of a threat to the God of Destruction, Vegeta does temporarily push Beerus back, even if just for a few seconds.
During the final few episodes ofDBS, Vegeta successfully takes out Toppo during the Tournament of Power, and the latter had ascended into a God of Destruction by that point.
Trunks
The Half-Saiyan Son Of Vegeta and Bulma
Trunksis the son of Vegeta and Bulma, making him half Earthling and half Saiyan. He is best friends with Goten, Goku’s younger son, and they are inseparable. He is quite cocky and proud of his strength and skills and is not afraid to brag about himself. Over time, he matures and becomes more stoic and well-mannered like his father. He is eager to learn and grow in power from his mentors and father.
Honestly, Trunks does not do all that much inDragon Ball Super, mostly being limited to short bursts of relevancy. Trunks is still too young and immature to be a viable option as a hero or fighter, and he was not considered for a spot on Universe 7’s team during the Tournament of Power.
Goten
Goku And Chi-Chi’s Second Son
Son of Goku and brother of Gohan,Gotenis apowerful half-Saiyanwho loves living wild and free. He shares the same mischievous and adventurous personality as his father when he was a child, but he has a better head on his shoulders due to his mother’s guidance. He and his best friend Trunks can fuse using the Fusion Dance to become Gotenks, an insanely strong Saiyan entity.
Similar to Trunks, Goten is just a bit-part player duringDragon Ball Super, mostly serving as a comedic entity. Still, he gets to shine during a few arcs, particularly Copy-Vegeta and the first saga with Beerus. ConsideringDBZ’s Buu Saga emphasized Goten and Trunks quite a bit, their almost non-existent contributions toSuperwere quite disappointing. Even if they are a bit too young to take over from Goku and Vegeta, they could have been set-up as future centerpieces. At the moment, they just seem destined to fade into the background, even more so than the likes of Gohan or Piccolo.
Gohan
Goku’s Oldest Son, A Fighter With Limitless Potential
Gohanis the oldest son of Goku, making him a half-Saiyan. Though he is incredibly strong and has great control over his Saiyan abilities, he doesn’t enjoy violence and prefers to study than fight. Gohan grows up to become a scholar and falls in love with Videl. He is naturally smart, humble, kind, and protective over those he cares about.
Gohan proved he was one of the strongest characters inDragon Ball Zthroughhis insane transformationsand attacks, but he mostly takes a backseat duringSuper. Still, he gets a couple of good moments during the Tournament of Power and was a featured character in theSuper Heromovie, and his star has continued to rise in the manga.
Gohan’s Best Moment In Dragon Ball Super
Unfortunately, Gohan accomplished very little throughoutDragon Ball Super, at least when it comes to the TV show. For example, his main contribution during the Golden Frieza Saga is to act as a beacon for Goku’s instant transmission. While he builds some momentum leading up to the Tournament of Power, he does not end up doing all that much and is eliminated quite early.
Thankfully, Gohan is effectivelyDragon Ball Super: Super Hero’s protagonist, granting him some much-needed time to shine. After seeing Piccolo fall,the Saiyan unlocks his Beast form, which is not only incredibly powerful but also looks fantastic.
Bulma
A Gifted Scientist
Bulmaused to be one ofDragon Ball’s unquestionable main characters, serving as a central figure during the original series. However, her role declines steadily as the story progresses, and she can feel like a minor player inDragon Ball Super. Still, she appears in basically every arc and delivers some of the biggest laughs, along with helping to further humanize her Saiyan husband. She plays a pivotal role in Beerus' introduction by being the catalyst for Vegeta to stop groveling, and she has fun mini-adventures with Jaco when the latter is brought into the fold.
Beyond that,Bulma plays a big partin the Future Trunks arc, which not only allows her to get some meaningful interactions with her son but also showcases her intelligence and scientific know-how. More than anything, Bulma is always willing to stand up for what she believes in, even if that involves confronting beings who can destroy planets without even trying.
Chi-Chi
Goku’s Wife, A Former Martial Arts Expert
Chi Chiis one of thestrongest human womenin the entire world and is married to Goku. She is a very strict and protective mother over her two sons and gets irritated when they break the rules. Chi Chi was a big advocate of Gohan pursuing academics rather than fighting, as he had a natural talent for it and preferred not to fight. She loves her family and will do anything she can to keep them safe.
Similar to Bulma, Chi Chi is mostly a background character inDragon Ball Super; in fact, she barely has a presence in the show since her contributions mostly revolve around her role as a mother.
Videl
Gohan’s Wife, And Mr. Satan’s Daughter
Videlwas introduced during the Majin Buu saga, and she became one of the series' most popular female characters. Her romance with Gohan is pretty interesting to witness, with the Saiyan training her to fight and control her ki. She married Gohan eventually and gave birth to Pan soon after. Her fighting days may be long behind her, but Videl is still an important character and makes a pretty cute painting with Gohan too.
Videl is largely on the same level as Chi Chi inDragon Ball Super, mostly serving as a minor character. That said, she is still likable and has a fun dynamic with Gohan.
Yamcha
A Fighter Relegated To A Joke Character
One of the most important characters in the originalDragon Ballanime,Yamcha’s relevance declined considerably once Saiyans became a thing, to the point of becoming something of ajoke character duringDBZ. InDragon Ball Super, he is barely anything more than a bit-part player who shows up for a few lines every dozen or so episodes.
Hell, Yamcha’s “biggest” storyline inDBSis solely at his expense, as he spends a few episodes waiting for Goku and company to ask him to be part of Universe 7’s Tournament of Power team. Obviously, his invite never arrived, which was the right choice. Yamcha has been presented as a useless weakling for too long to be rehabilitated at this point, at least not as a competent fighter.
Krillin
Goku’s Best Friend And Confidante
Speaking ofDragon Ballcharacters who slipped into the background due to the arrival of Saiyans,Krillin’s ceiling is too low to be a major contributor toDragon Ball Super’s arcs. To be fair, the show’s most powerful human still gets to shine on occasion, and he does not embarrass himself during the Tournament of Power. However, Krillin has been mostly relegated to Goku’s best friend, a role that is constantly under threat of being begrudgingly inherited by Vegeta (in terms of screentime, the latter far exceeds Krillin).
While he might not be able to put up a fight against major villains,Krillin is still an important part ofDragon Ball, serving to ground the more outlandish characters. He is also intelligent, kind, and resourceful, three traits that have come to define him more than his martial arts ability.
Piccolo
An Antagonist Who Joins The Good Side
This bone-crushing character is a Namekien and a part of the Dragon Clan, the original creators of the Dragon Balls.Piccolowas introduced in the franchise as an antagonist, out to defeat Goku.
However, in the events ofDragon Ball ZandSuper, he is a companion to the Saiyans on Earth and fights alongside them in many battles. Still, he is typically always very stern, grumpy, and likes being alone. He never smiles and isn’t the most friendly of people. Piccolo’s role inSuperis largely the same as the post-Namek arcs ofZ, meaning he is a constant presence but rarely the focus. That said,Super Herohighlighted Piccolo’s friendship with Gohan.
Tien
A Tournament Rival Who Joins Goku’s Side After A Well-Fought Battle
Out of all the Earthlings in the Z Warriors,Tienis perhaps the only one who can hold his own against tough opposition. His Tri-Beam is a technique so deadly that Tien himself can’t fire off too many of these blasts before breathing his last.
Even inDragon Ball Super, Tien holds his own and gets some episodes to shine when Goku and the gang try to recruit him for the Tournament of Power. He may channel his goofy side more often than not nowadays, but Tien knows when it’s time to get serious.
Majin Buu
A Former Evil Being Who Becomes Good
Majin Buuwas initially introduced as a dastardly antagonist with no regard for human life. However, it turned out that he had the mind of a child and was slowly convinced by Mr. Satan to mend his ways. While this led to the evil in his heart being expelled and taking on a villainous form of its own, Majin Buu still came back to become a hero in his own right. He may sleep too much and eat buckets of food, but that doesn’t take away from how powerful he can be.
InDragon Ball Super, Majin Buu is arguably one of the most frustrating characters, as he is repeatedly set up to be a major player, only to be removed as a joke. Still, he did at least get to shine during the Universe Survival saga, and it was a shame he was not part of Universe 7’s team during the Tournament of Power. Presuming he did not sleep through it, he would have been more useful than most of the fighters.
Master Roshi
Founder Of The Turtle School
Master Roshiis a master of martial arts and taught many of the main characters inthe Dragon Teamall they know about fighting. He is a hermit who has lived for over three hundred years due to his impressive health.
Master Roshi often acts immaturely and inappropriately. He may not be the most respected character, and he could definitely use a personality change, but he is undeniably a dangerous force to mess with.
Beerus
The Destroyer God Of Universe 7
This menacing God of Destruction wants the total destruction of Earth and will fight anyone on the Dragon Team to make that happen. He desires to be respected as a god and has a very mean yet lazy personality.
Beerusis well-mannered and speaks very politely, as a higher being in power would. He isthe toughest antagonistthat Goku has had to face inDragon Ball Super, making him a memorable and interesting villain.
Whis
An Angel Who Keeps Beerus In Check
Whisis an Angel that serves as Beerus' mentor, a reveal that surprised many viewers at the end of the Battle of the Gods arc. He’s a charming character whose love for food never gets tiring to watch.
He’s also one of the strongest beings in the show and the most powerful deity in Universe 7. It’s easy to see why he has made such a strong and lasting impression, with his training of Goku and Vegeta allowing both Saiyans to heighten their powers to a level that is simply incredible.
Champa
Beerus' Twin, Destroyer God Of Universe 6
Universe 6 houses some of the more interesting characters inSuper, andChampais no exception here. Despite seeming like a lazy, chubbier reskin of Beerus, this character ends up being engaging in his own right.
His rivalry with his brother makes the interactions between the two Destroyer Gods a joy to watch. What makes this even more endearing is that, despite the hate they display for each other, it’s clear that both siblings have a soft spot for each other under this hardened exterior.
Vados
Whis' Sister, Universe 6’s Angel
Vadosis the older sister of Whis. This observation is obvious when viewers take a good look at both Angels. Suffice it to say, she’s the strongest entity in Universe 6 and keeps things in check in case the Destroyer God she’s looking over goes out of control.
Not a lot is known about her character, although it goes without saying that she’d be just as calm-headed and powerful as the other angels. She’s stated to be stronger than her brother, which is a rather interesting fact.
Broly
The Legendary Super Saiyan
Brolyis the first-ever Legendary Super Saiyan that was shown in the series, making a lasting impression despite being a non-canon character for the longest time.With his appearance inDragon Ball Super: Broly, this character has finally become a part of the mainDragon Ballnarrative.
This Saiyan’s isolation caused him a lot of pain, making him fly into a rage whenever his emotions reached a peak. His fight against Gogeta is a thing of beauty and shows just how much power this character houses.
Frieza
A Tyrant Emperor Who Comes Back With A New Form
Friezaisone of the most iconicDragon Ballvillains of all time. The fact that he was brought back inDragon Ball Supershows just how much of a lasting impact this character has. Frieza’s new form has allowed him to stand toe-to-toe with the best inDragon Ball Super. Of course, there are times when he gets the short end of the stick… but that is to be expected, given the sheer wealth of power characters possess nowadays inDragon Ball Super.
Frieza becomes an oddly prominent character inSuper, showing up for the Tournament of Power and even featuring in Broly’s film.
Frieza’s Best Moment(s) In Dragon Ball Super
Surprisingly, Frieza gets more time in the sun than most of the Z-Fighters inDragon Ball Super. After Goku and Vegeta, the villainous emperor is Universe 7’s most important fighter, and he gets a few memorable sequences during the Tournament of Power. Frieza’s standout moment duringDBS' final arc is when he teaches Frost a lesson, revealing that he had no intention of honoring their team-up.
As great as this moment is, Frieza’s best episode of this series happens just before the tournament begins, when he fights off Universe 9’s assassins. From the epic transformation into his golden form to his vicious annihilation of his enemies, this sequence is Frieza at his peak.
Zamasu
A Kai In The Making Who Goes Rogue
Zamasuwasa heinous deity who lost all faith in mortalsafter focusing strictly on their bad side instead of having a broader viewpoint. In Future Trunks' timeline, he decided to end all mortals and plunged the world back into a state of war after already being ravaged by the Androids.
Thankfully, Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks managed to power up just enough to take out the two fighters, despite Future Zamasu’s immortality being pretty tough to deal with. Thankfully, this immortality came back to bite him when he fused with Goku Black and turned into an unholy abomination after being injured.
Goku Black
Zamasu’s Mind In Goku’s Body
The Future Trunks arc could’ve been a highlight inDragon Ball Super, but weird power scaling and a disappointing conclusion took a lot away from what should’ve been a high-stakes story. Still, there’s no denying thatGoku Blackis one of the best antagonists in the series, who looks pretty menacing to boot.
His Super Saiyan Rose form is as daunting as they come, with the use of energy blades further heightening his scare factor. Watching him get schooled by Goku and Vegeta makes for a cathartic time, at least until he fuses with Future Zamasu.
Cabba
Universe 6 Saiyan
While overshadowed by Universe 6’s two other Saiyans,Cabbawas the first to step through the multiverse door and demonstrate a different path the race could have taken if they had not succumbed to Frieza. Unlike the typical Universe 7 Saiyan, Cabba is surprisingly soft-spoken, kind, and unambitious. He does not seek violence or believe himself to be superior to everyone else, nor is he driven by a desire to pursue power.
At least, he is initially introduced like that. Once he meets Vegeta and is goaded into turning Super Saiyan, Cabba picks up a few traits that are associated with Universe 7’s Saiyans. That said, he is still generally driven by a desire to do good. After the Universe 6 and 7 tournaments, Cabba returns to his home planet and, eventually, runs into Caulifla and Kale. He ends up teaching the former how to become a Super Saiyan, demonstrating an alternative technique to Vegeta’s “anger-first” method. At the Tournament of Power, Cabba takes a backseat to Hit, Caulifla, and Kale, ultimately falling to Frieza. That said, he manages to achieve Super Saiyan 2.
Caulifla
TheUniverse 6 Saiyanswere nice additions toDragon Ball, and they were introduced as counters to Universe 7’s heroes. Unlike the latter’s hot-blooded warriors, the former representatives are slightly more subdued. Although still driven by a desire to become stronger, they are not particularly consumed by it, at least not when they are introduced. While Kale and Cabba have personalities that directly oppose the presentation of traditional Universe 7 Saiyans,Cauliflais something of an exception, with her arrogant demeanor not being that different from the likes of Vegeta.
Considering she is only around for a short period, Caulifla speed runs the Saiyan transformation process, managing to achieve Super Saiyan 2 during the Tournament of Power. She put up quite a good fight against Goku, forcing him to repeatedly power up and eventually reach Super Saiyan God form.
Kale
Except for maybe Hit,Kaleis the highlight of Universe 6’s team, both in terms of power and personality. Initially written off as just Female Broly, Kale eventually comes into her own as a character, largely thanks to her friendship with Caulifla. Personality-wise, she is a refreshing departure from pretty much any other Saiyan inDragon Ball, showing a degree of self-doubt that is atypical for the race.
While Caulifla becomes physically stronger throughout the Tournament of Power, Kale manages to completely eclipse her close ally, becoming the legendary Super Saiyan in the process. She also goes through an engaging character arc that sees her gradually grow more confident, breaking away from her original passive nature.
Jiren
The Most Powerful Pride Trooper Of Universe 11
Jirenis one of the toughest opponents Goku has ever battled against. These powerful members of the Pride Troopers seemed downright impossible to beat, prompting Goku to unlock a whole new form to deal with this tough foe.
Jiren’sbattle against Ultra Instinct Gokuwas the stuff of legends, with the Pride Trooper being pushed to a level he’d never experienced before. It was an awe-inspiring battle that ended with both Goku and Frieza teaming up to eliminate Jiren and win the tournament.

A Pride Trooper Being Groomed To Become The Next God Of Destruction
The leader of the Pride Troopers is not to be trifled with. When push comes to shove,Topcan beat down the toughest warriors in the multiverse with ease. There’s a reason why he was selected to be a candidate for the next God of Destruction.
Vegeta has his hands full with Top when they go toe-to-toe in battle, and watching the Saiyan Prince finally get his time in the limelight after being overshadowed by Goku time and time again is a great moment. He may not be effective in the fight against Jiren, but Top isn’t all that far behind in terms of strength.
Zeno
The All-Powerful Omni King
Zenois the most powerful character inDragon Ball. The ruler of the Omniverse may look like a child, but he’s so strong that he can destroy the entire universe at a whim. The most powerful beings in the universe bow their head to him, trying their hardest not to make a mistake that may invoke the anger of this omnipotent being.
The fact that Goku can just walk up to him nonchalantly and informally address the Omni King is a great example of why everyone loves the Saiyan protagonist so much. This attitude irks every divine being, some of whom are jealous that the Omni King has taken such a liking to this goofy character.
