Summary

A lot of changes are coming to the Power system ofDestiny 2whenThe Final Shapeexpansion makes it debut on June 4. WhileDestiny 2’s Fireteam Power feature was initially announced back in August during theDestiny 2Showcase 2023, the developers are now announcing updated changes as to how the feature will allow its players more interaction with their friends in the upcoming expansion.

Power Levels inDestiny 2are determined by the gear that players have equipped, with higher-level gear granting higher levels of Power. Power levels aren’t actually cumulative, but rather, take into account the average score of the gear that a player has equipped. What givesDestiny 2Fireteam Powerits main appeal is that it will permit players to experience endgame content with friends even if their own Power Levels aren’t high enough. It does this by providing a boost to players with lower Power Levels that place them just five points under the Power Leader, or the player in the fireteam who has the highest Power Level.

In a recentThis Week InDestinyupdate, the developers have noted that they have overhauled the Power system for The Final Shape to make it easier for players to understand and to “Lower the barrier to entry forDestiny 2story content.” The biggest change to this system walks back a previous decision to limit the Power levels that Legacy Gear items can reach. In other words, the caps that Bungie had previously put in place to limit the Power that can be assigned to older gear items will be removed inThe Final Shape, which the developers hope will allow older players who have leftDestiny 2behind to return to the game and enjoy all the expansion content has to offer.

More Power Changes Coming To The Final Shape

Dismantling gear inDestiny 2is one way to acquire more materials, and Bungie has acknowledged that a lot of players may have already dismantled their older Power-capped gear items due to the developers' previous decision to limit their Power. While there is no current method for recovering those items, the developer also stated in the update that it will be providing ways for players to acquire these items again.

In addition to these changes, Bungie is also simplifyingThe Final Shape’s Activity Power system by separating activies into two different categories: Power Enabled, which will set Power caps that determine a player’s maximum effectiveness against enemies, and Power Disabled, in which a player’s Power shouldn’t have an effect on the difficulty. According to the developer update, campaigns, seasonal story missions, free-roam destinations, and Crucible will all be Power Disabled, whileDestiny 2’s Vanguard playlists, Nightfalls, Seasonal activities, Exotic Mission Rotators, Trials of Osiris, raids, and dungeons will all be Power Enabled.
