The Cloverfield Paradoxhelmer Julius Onah has been tapped to directCaptain America 4for Marvel Studios. The developing MCU flick will be first solo feature for Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson since he first accepted the Captain America mantle inThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
While theCaptain Americatitle was handed to Sam Wilson by Steve Rogers atthe end ofAvengers: Endgame, Wilson initally had trouble accepting the role. It wasn’t until the end ofThe Falcon and the Winter Soldierthat Wilson accepted the Captain America title, despite his reservations and awareness of the prejudice he would face as a Black man taking up the shield.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learnedCaptain America 4is moving fowardwith Onah in the director’s chair. In addition to helmingThe Cloverfield Paradox, the Nigerian-American filmmaker’s directing resume includesThe Girl Is in Troubleand the well-receivedLuce, which starred Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer. As previously reported,The Falcon and the Winter Soldiercreator and head writerMalcolm Spellman will pen the screenplay forCaptain America 4alongside Dalan Musson, who was a staff writer on the Disney Plus series. At this time, a production start date forCaptain America 4has not been announced.
As to be expected, Mackie will not be reprising his role as the Falcon now that Sam Wilson has retired from the role upon accepting the Captain America moniker. No other cast members have officially been announced forCaptain America 4, andthat includes Sebastian Stan, who has stated that he has no idea if he will appear in the film. Also in question is whether Danny Ramirez will reprise hisFalcon and Winter Soldierrole as Joaquin Torres. However, it seems likely Ramirez will return considering Torres becomes the new Falcon in the comics and Sam Wilson literally handed his wings over to Torres inThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
While there have been rumors thatChris Evans will reprise his role as Captain Americain a future project, fans probably shouldn’t expect to see him reunite with Mackie forCaptain America 4. Evans has shut down those rumors and recently expressed his reluctance to play Captain America again after bringing his character’s arc to a satifying conclusion.
Regardless, it’s probably best to let Mackie’s Captain America have the spotlight to himself for his first solo adventure on the big screen. After all, the new Captain America will have enough companions if Bucky Barnes and Joaquin Torres join him.
