BioWarehas created an assortment of in-depth stories over the years since the gaming company developed and published games. Throughout these stories there have been someincredible heroesthat havebecome memorable and loved by playersthat have enjoyed those titles.

Some of these heroes aren’t even the main characters of the story they are found in but continue to strive for excellence as well as hoping they can help people during these epic adventures BioWare has created. With so many interesting choices of heroes throughout the years, some of these well-known heroes are much greater than the rest and that is whythese Bioware heroes are by far the best of the bunch.

Updated on June 24, 2025, by Megan Smith:BioWare has countless heroes across all the franchises they have ever created. Many of these heroes have been incredibly memorable, as well as being the heroes BioWare has ever created. With Dragon Age: Dreadwolf becoming even more of a reality, with many players believing the release date is to be announced soon, many players have wondered what sort of hero they will be playing as and how they compare to past BioWare heroes. With this in mind, these are by far the best heroes created by BioWare that the next Dragon Age protagonist or companions can only hope to be as great as.

TheDragon Agefranchise has its fair share of heroes that the player gets to control. The third title in the franchise known asDragon Age: Inquistionallows players to take on the role of the Inquisitor. The stakes have been raised significantly in this title as players are now left with the challenge of essentially saving the entire world from the fade being ripped open.

Players will have various options that will see their character either become the praised hero many are expected to be, or the tyrant ruler that instead hopes to take over the world in place of Corypheus, who is the main antagonist of the game. The player will see their order expand as more come to their support.

Jade Empireis a commonly forgotten about RPG by BioWare, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any memorable heroes. The Spirit Monk, who is the main protagonist of the game, is proven to be quite the heroic soul throughout the entire adventure.

LikeMass Effect, places have various choices of reaction to either approach situations with an open palm or a raised fist, allowing them to become the benevolent hero of their dreams that will eventually save their mentor from danger. Not to forget to mention how many other people the Spirit Monk also saves along the way.

While controlled by the player in a world that is free for them to explore and interact with however they wish. The Hero of Ferelden is still deemed to be a great hero of the time that the Blight nearly overrun Ferelden.

Although the player did havehelp from their companions, it was up to them to make the decisions that truly mattered. In the end it is most likely that the player will be the one to sacrifice themselves to put an end to the Blight as many look to them to save the world.

If BioWare is good at something, then it is creating intriguing character arcs and growth. Bastila Shan who was anincredibly powerful Jediwas one of the characters inStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicthat kept many players interested in finishing the story.

Bastila Shan shares a close bond with the player throughout the story due to her being their savior. She continues to be a valued party member throughout the game until she is kidnapped and converted by Darth Malak. Though turned to the dark side, the player has a chance to show Bastila the light, proving that she’s even strong enough to be redeemed and then continued to support the Republic and help Revan defeat Malak.

Mass Effecthas had plenty of interesting and amazing companions that players love having on their team throughout the three main games of the franchise. While some of these companions' moral compasses may be a little skewed, one alien that has always attempted to do right is the Turian, Garrus Vakarian.

Even in the first game, Garrus is shown to be a member of C-Sec, the group that handles security on the Citadel. It’s Garrus' job to ensure that the law is followed and that everyone is safe there, though evidently C-Sec is suffering from some corruption. In later games, Garrus becomes a sort of vigilante, taking the law into his own hands in the hope of helping people like Shepherd.

5Revan (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic)

Redeems Himself Through Player’s Actions

While someStar Warsfans may be familiar with Revan due to Darth Revan the Sith Lord,Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicgives players the freedom to play Revan however they see fit. With the chance to give this once dark-sided character a redemption arc, Revan becomes quite the interesting hero.

Although it could be argued that Revan doesn’t know who they are for most of the game; they are still strong enough to not fall back into their old Sith ways throughout the game if the player decides to continue down the Jedi path. By the time it is revealed to the player that they wereonce a Sith Lord, Revan can continue to help the Jedi, denying their past ways.

Baldur’s Gateis another BioWare game that is full of heart-warming and hilarious characters that the player has a chance to recruit onto their team but one of the most intriguing is the human ranger Minsc. Besides Minsc’s quirky nature that players will see from him constantly talking to his Hamster who he claims to be from Space, all Minsc wants to be is a hero.

A commendable goal that he proves throughoutBaldur’s Gate,as he will go to great distances if he believes it will make him into one. Just the effort he puts in alone is enough to make Minsc one of the greatest heroes of BioWare’s games. Minsc as seen continues to be a great hero even when reiintroduced inBaldur’s Gate 3which was created by Larian Studios.

Following the tale of a refuge from the times of the Blight, the story of the main character Hawke as they make a name for themselves inDragon Age 2, is great evidence of how brilliant of a hero they actually are. Throughout the different acts in the timeline ofDragon Age 2,Hawke grows into quite the hero as they must protect and aidthe people of Kirkwallon several occasions.

One such event even sees them crowned as the Champion of Kirkwall for quelling the Qunari invasion, which would’ve seen Kirkwall fall otherwise. Hawke remains selfless as they even become Viscount of the city, although all this is forced to change once the events ofDragon Age: Inquisitionbegin.

2Varric Tethras (Dragon Age 2 & Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Continues To Stand For What’s Right

Another recurring BioWare character that many players of theDragon Agefranchise love is the Dwarf rogue, Varric Tethras. Being close friends with Hawke throughoutDragon Age 2as well as also being a companion in Dragon Age: Inquisition, Varric may be a dramatic storyteller, but he’s also a selfless soul.

Although a hero himself, Varric continues to write tales about Hawke, never allowing himself to be themain character of his books. In the third game of the franchise, Varric mentions that he wants to make a difference and sees the quest to the end, proving himself worth the title of hero.

Unsurprisingly, one of the greatest BioWare heroes of all is one that has proven themselves consistently across all three of the mainMass Effecttitles and has become a main character that many players have adored the story of. Commander Shepherd may look like thetypical space captain, but their story is an epic one that proves they are willing to take the risks to save the Galaxy.

No matter if players choose the Paragon or Renegade path, in one way or another, Shepherd will be viewed as a hero with the recent conclusion to their legacy. Many players yearn for another Mass Effect title with their hero, Commander Shepherd, as the main character.
