Summary

Obsidian Entertainmentis known as the developer of amazing RPGs that have captured the hearts and minds of fans the world over. Whether it be massive AAA projects or small-scale RPGs that make the most of their truncated budget, there’s no denying that Obsidian’s games have the uncanny power to transport players into magical worlds with high stakes and likable characters, with these adventures lasting for hundreds of hours.

Pretty much every Obsidian game features a wealth of well-written characters, with the women in these games being standouts. In fact, some of these characters stand as some of the best women in gaming, which is no mean feat. It’s a testament to the stellar writing talent at Obsidian that each one of their games features a wealth ofamazing female characterswho are a step above their counterparts in other games.

Scarlet Lake in Alpha Protocol

Obsidian Entertainment has a poor reputation for featuring a lot of bugs in their video games at launch, and no game personifies this more thanAlpha Protocol. The poor UI elements coupled with a wealth of glitches meant thatAlpha Protocolgave an extremely poor first impression, and was savagely ripped apart by critics as a result. It’s a shame, since the idea of playing an espionage RPG was pretty tantalizing, andAlpha Protocolbrought many new (and sometimes ingenious) ideas to the table.

Thewriting in this game is impressive, with the main character having a number of romantic interests with whom he can form strong bonds over the course of the title. One of those characters isScarlet Lake, a photojournalist with incredible strength of will who puts herself in harm’s way over and over again to help Michael Thorton unravel a conspiracy that could plunge the entire world into a state of pure chaos. She’s brave, bold, and very likeable.

Pallegina in Pillars of Eternity 2

4Pallegina

A Paladin Who Works With The Valian Republics

Godlike are some of the most feared and misunderstood people inthe world ofPillars of Eternity, with most other races reacting to them in weird and interesting ways.Palleginaunderstands this discrimination firsthand, given thatshe herself is an avian Godlikewho serves the Valian Trading Company and accompanies the hero across both games.

She’s a Paladin who is extremely effective in combat, and can turn the tide of battle against her enemies in a flash. Her effectiveness in the fray, coupled with her healing abilities, make her one of the most valuable party members in the game. Players will love to have her in their party against some of the toughest bosses across both games, especially as her backstory and Godlike nature become more fleshed out.

Verse in Tyranny

Tyrannyisone of Obsidian’s best gamesuntil the very end, with the lack of budget clearlyseen in the abrupt endingthat arrives just when things are getting good. Still, the journey to reach this point is as engaging as can be, with the unique world and memorable characters making it one of the best video games in the CRPG genre. One of the standout party members in the game that players will grow to love isVerse, a member of the Scarlet Chorus who joins the player’s party.

This brutal warrior may seem like a savage who just loves the thrill of battle, only for her backstory to reveal that she had a bunch of Scarlet Furies whom she considered to be her sisters, until they died in the heat of battle when she froze against a group of tough enemies. It turns out that the people who killed Verse’s companions were agents of the Voices of Nerat, prompting Verse to face off against the leader of her group in an epic confrontation.

Veronica Santangelo in Fallout New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegasisone of Obsidian’s best and most popular video games, with each and every companion in the game being a blast to interact with. One of the first companions that most players will come across isVeronica, a scribe in the Brotherhood of Steel who wants the dying group to change their ways before they eventually fade into obscurity.

She is voiced by the talented Felicia Day, and is a fascinating character to interact with. Players will love finishing her companion questline, especially since it lets players interact with the Brotherhood of Steel and shape their future, while also dictating what Veronica will do after her journey with the Courier draws to a close.

Knights Of The Old Republic 2 Kreia Death Star

GivenStar Wars' binary take on the Light and Dark Side, most people were impressed byKreia’sideology inthe sequel toKnights of the Old Republic, developed in tandem by Aspyr and Obsidian. Despite moving over to the Dark Side, Kreia’s reasoning for doing so is fascinating, in that it’s hard not to agree with her if players don’t harbor a binary sense of morality.

She’s arguably the best-written antagonist inStar Warshistory, which is no mean feat. It’s a shame that this game, like many others, was plagued with bugs at launch that diminished its quality. Most people who give this game a shot after downloading some much-needed mods will agree that this is an excellent sequel that deserves all its plaudits, and this is in no smalll part due to Kreia’s excellent characterization.
