Baldur’s Gate 3is an expansive game, designed in the tradition of history’s best RPGs, and offers every character vast amounts of weapons, armor, and magical items. Some of these items are easy to miss considering how much content is in the game, and thrown weapons are a niche that only interests certain players.

Players are able to launch certain weapons at enemies, not to be confused with the other throwing feature where players can toss characters at adversaries. When this type of weapon is thrown, it automatically returns to the wielder and doesn’t need to be picked up again.

Updated March 13th, 2025, by Kristy Ambrose:Rogues are often the class that uses these types of weapons, like throwing daggers, for example, but classes that use Strength can throw bigger weapons, like tridents and warhammers. Most of the time, classes have options for using ranged attacks to deal with enemies, but classes such as Fighter or Barbarian don’t always have on-hand ways to utilize ranged attacks and must resort to throwing weapons. There are a wide variety of thrown weapons in the game, and some of them are better than others, but it always depends on every character’s unique build. This update adds a unique weapon, the Syringe from the House of Healing, as well as splitting a combo entry to better differentiate the two distinct weapons.

14Vision Of The Absolute

Combine Two Pieces Of A Broken Spear

This weapon must be repaired with the Shaft of a Broken Spear as found west of the Druid Grove on Edowin’s body, and the Head of a Broken Spear can be looted in the Owlbear Nest. If the player encounters this beast, there’s a dialogue option that makes note of the broken spear stuck in her head. Combine these two parts and theVision Of The Absolutewill be repaired.

The Vision of the Absolute doesn’t possess any special enchantments or extra damage but instead holds a unique feature that Blinds enemies that fail a Dexterity saving throw, one of many status effectsin the game. Be warned, this only activates when wielding the weapon, not when thrown.

The weapon also dishes out 2 - 12 Piercing Damage to any enemies with multiple sets of eyes. Aside from these special properties, the Vision of the Absolute has all the regular features one would expect of a weapon. It can be Dipped, it is in the Versatile class and has a Strength modifier.

Unholy Assassins Can Buy It From The Echo of Abazigal

Stealth can be one of the most overpowered ways to achieve victory in battles inBaldur’s Gate 3.That being said, theDread Iron Daggeris strong because of stealth, with an inherent property that deals bonus 1d6 Necrotic Damage when the user is hidden, making it great for co-op playthroughs.

On top of this, the Dread Iron Dagger possesses a Dexterity and Strength modifier. The dagger also has an inherent +1 enchantment without using spells, and dishes out Piercing Damage, just one of the many damage types.

12Cold Snap

Purchased From Ferq Drogher In Rivington

A simple enough weapon to find, theCold Snapis a dagger. It can be wielded one-handed in the off-hand, and on top of its base damage, it deals additional Cold Damage as well. With the aesthetic of this weapon involving the cold, the dagger also includes the Chilling Counter effect.

When an enemy misses the user, the enemy must pass a Constitution saving throw of 13, or they will suffer the Chilled condition. This makes enemies weak to any Cold damage, but strong against Fire, and they will become Frozen if applied with the Wet condition. This can pair well with the Trident of the Waves weapon, as it applies Wet to targets.

11The Sparky Points

A Reward For “Rescue The Grand Duke”

The Sparky Pointsis a bit more of a complex weapon, with players needing an understanding of Lightning Charges to use it effectively. When a user deals damage, they will gain two Lightning Charges. Gaining Lightning charges will deal additional Lightning Damage and give a +1 to Attack Rolls. Gaining five charges will deal an additional 1d8 Lightning Damage.

As well as Lightning Charges, this weapon deals 1 – 8 base damage and is Piercing. As is the case with all weapons, becoming proficient with The Sparky Points will allow the use of various Weapon Actions.

10Bloodthirst

Loot It From Orin

Bloodthirstis a Legendary Dagger inBaldur’s Gate 3and can be looted from Orin’s body. In addition to its +2 modifier, what makes Bloodthirst perfect for throwing builds is its innate ability, Bound Weapon, which causes the weapon to automatically return to the character who throws it.

What prevents Bloodthirst from being higher up the list is the fact that its signature ability, Exploit Weakness, which makes targets vulnerable to Pierce damage, doesn’t work if the weapon is thrown. Still, if there isn’t another party member who wants to use this dagger, it’s anexcellent backup option for single-target DPS.

9The Watcher’s Guide

In The Trapped Chest In The Dank Crypt

The Watcher’s Guideis one of the earliest weapons players can get inBaldur’s Gate 3with the Thrown attribute, making it the first option players should go for at the start of a new run. It’s located in the trapped chestfound in the Dank Crypt.

The Watcher’s Guide uses the Strength modifier for its damage multiplier, making classes like Fighter and Barbarian the best choices for wielding it. Its special ability, Death’s Promise, makes it so that if the user misses a target once, their next attack with The Watcher’s Guide automatically gainsTrue Strike, which is excellent for striking against enemies with high AC at higher difficulty settings.

Unfortunately, this feature has no bearing on the weapon’s viability as a thrown weapon, since it doesn’t activate in that scenario. It’s the best option for thrown weapon builds in the early game but gets quickly outclassed by the Returning Pike after players get it.

8Orphic Hammer

Found in the House of Hope

Orphic Hammeris a Warhammer central to the main story ofBaldur’s Gate 3about Orpheus, the rogue Githyanki prince imprisoned by Vlaakith in the Astral Plane. Obtaining the Orphic Hammer is a requirement to free Orpheus from this prison (if players decide to stand against the Emperor). It can be found on top of a pedestal inside theHouse of Hope Archives.

The Orphic Hammer has a +3 enchantment, one of the very few in all ofBG3as well as the ability to increase its damage via dipping. Characters who have this weapon equipped also gain Spell Resistance, gaining the ability to make all saving throws against spells with advantage.

Orphic Hammer has the Thrown Weapon characteristic, which means it deals full damage when thrown. However, unlike theDwarven Thrower, it does not automatically return after being thrown, and players will need to useEldritch Knight’s Weapon Bondto make it return. Its innately buffed damage makes it excellent at dealing massive damage to high-health, high-AC single targets.

7Lightning Jabber

Dropped By The Kuo-Toa Chief

An uncommon spear, theLightning Jabberapplies extra Lightning Damage on top of its base damage with a +1 Weapon enchantment. The Lightning Jabber has a special effect that deals bonus Lightning Damage when thrown, clearly making it valuable for such a playthrough.

It only grants one Weapon Action when enough proficiency is met. Despite this, the Lightning Jabber possesses the Shocking Sting passive, which can Shock a target, meaning enemies won’t be able to utilize Reactions while suffering this effect.

6Returning Pike

Purchased From Grat The Trader

As its name suggests, theReturning Pikeholds the Homing property, making it return to the player after it has been thrown. A weapon that returns, instead of staying with an enemy, is more valuable.

In addition to its returning nature, the weapon also possesses a +1 enchantment. Those with classes scaling in Strength will be thankful as the weapon’s modifier uses the same stat. As it is a pike, the damage type dealt is Piercing, and gives the user the Extra Reach attribute as well.

5Syringe

Drops From Sister Geanne In The House Of Healing

When the player first meetsMalus Thorm in the House of Healing, they have a chance to convince him to be the next autopsy if the dice rolls are good. The Sisters of the House of Healing will then slay him on the player’s behalf, but the disadvantage here is that players won’t have access to the various medical-themed weapons that the Sisters drop.

Sister Anya is the one with this Syringe, which has the base stats of a simple Uncommon dagger along with a deadly special ability. The wielder can Inject Nostrum, which is apparently the mysterious liquid in the syringe, and Poison their target.
