World of Warcraftis one of those rare cases where the spin-off game has far surpassed the original in terms of popularity, and for an MMO that has lasted for over seventeen years, it represents an anomaly on its own as well. TheWarcraftfranchise had its roots in the strategy genre, starting off as a trilogy of games where players could control armies of orcs, humans, and more. This year, aWarcraftmobile gameis going to be unveiled sometime in May, and no one has any clue as to what it might be.

Warcraftwas Blizzard’s take on a real-time strategy;World of Warcraftwas its take on a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game; Hearthstone was a card game set in theWarcraftuniverse. Many are left wonderinghow the nextWarcraftgame might look, or what its gameplay loop may be, and some are cautiously cynical that a mobile game would be a poor addition to theWarcraftfranchise. Popular Twitch streamer Asmongold is not one of them.

In a recent stream, Asmongold was quick to provide his opinion on apotentialWorld of Warcraftmobile gameteased by Blizzard in itsWarcraftroadmap for 2022. He welcomed the idea, claiming that it’s an opportunity to engage more people with the Warcraft universe, serving as a gateway to get a new audience involved with the community. The streamer is aware that many people might be upset with the idea by default, but he is cautiously optimistic about the project. On paper, at least.

In Asmongold’s mind, there is nothing inherently wrong with a mobile game set in theWarcraftuniverse, and even if this spin-off ends up being pay-to-win – as many in his audience worry that it’s going to be – Asmongold claims that it’s no better than whatWorld of Warcraftis right now, withWorld of Warcraft’stokenrepresenting an unofficial pipeline for players to turn their real money into boosts to obtain achievements and gear without personal gameplay effort on their part.

As for what the gameplay in this mobile spin-off game might be, Asmongold’s personal belief is that rather than seeing aWorld of Warcraftmobile client, citing the absurdity of doing a Mythic raid on one’s phone, the game might instead be all about tower-defense, not unlike countlesspopularWarcraft 3custom maps.

Before the mobile game gets unveiled, however, players will find out all about thenextWorld of Warcraftexpansion on April 19th.
