At The Game Awards 2022, FromSoftware not only won Game of the Year forElden Ringbut announced its very next title,Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. While some hoped that this title would introducepopular Souls features to the mecha franchise, the studio has since confirmed that this is not the case. It’s going to channel the pure mecha style that caused the games to be essentially viral long ago.
Helmed bySekiro’s Masaru Yamamura,Armored Core 6takes place on the planet of Rubicon 3where a new energy source has caused an apocalyptic event, razing the planet in flames. A half-century after Rubicon 3’s destruction, humans are once again fighting over control of this substance, where players take control of a mercenary pilot working for MegaCorps and resistance groups. And as a pilot of one of the titular Armored Core, many fans will no doubt enjoy showing off their machines to their friends.

Previously, FromSoftware had confirmed that there will be amultiplayer component inArmored Core 6, focused on PVP and allowing players to show off their customized mechs. However, it has also recently confirmed in a recent interview with IGN Japan, as transcribed by MP1st, that there will be no co-op gameplay for the story mode. This may come as a surprise since co-op is common in FromSoftware’s Soulsborne titles, but again, this is not a Souls game. It’s anArmored Coregame. The rationale for excluding co-op boils down to the emphasis on the single-player story.
As Yamamura said,FromSoftwarehas “chosen not to include cooperative play because we want to emphasize the dynamic action, the free-running of your aircraft, and the active changes you can make during missions.” If single-player spectacle and a solid story mode are why there’s no co-op, that should come across as good news for fans. It shows FromSoftware’s emphasis on its core story mode.
The wait for Armored Core 6 continues, but it’s not the only thing fans are wanting to see out of FromSoftware in 2023. At The Game Awards,FromSoftware Hidetaka Miyazaki all but confirmedElden RingDLCwas on the way, so fingers crossed these projects get release dates soon enough.
Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubiconwill be released in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
