The many different parrots of thePokemonworld now all have connections to each other through a shared family tree made by a dedicated fan. The tree gives lineages to the various parrots that connect them all back to a commonPokemonancestor.
While there arethe silly Pokemon that Game Freak keeps makingas it reaches for new ideas after all these years, there are the design norms that fans have come to expect with each new generation. Bird Pokemon are one of those norms that always pop up whenever a new generation is introduced. There are more birds in thePokemonuniverse than almost any other real-life species represented in the fictional world, and parrots make up a decent number of those birds.

A recent post on Reddit shows an ancestry tree that connects all the various parrot Pokemon back to a common ancestor. The four parrot Pokemon in question are Natu and Xatu of Johto, Chatot of Sinnoh, and Squawkabilly from the most recent andincredibly scenic Paldea region ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet. Each of them gets two sets of unique ancestors who all spawned from one common ancestor, the Pipsquawk and Beaktoven pair. All of the ancestors are, of course, completely designed by the fan responsible for creating this ancestry tree, and the designs are very well done.
The ancestry tree does an interesting job showing how one Pokemon line could have turned into the drastically different parrots fans have today by making small changes within different ancestors that eventually lead up to the major differences that exist between them now. For instance, having one color scheme that compliments Chatot, Xatu, and Squawkabilly, but then eventually incorporates the colors that are unique to the three lines, although it doesn’t manage all of Squawkabilly’s coloredspecial forms present inPokemonScarlet and Violet. It also does something similar with the head feather that eventually becomes Chatot’s musical note and Squawkabilly’s puffy hair.
The Bird Pokemon of Paldea don’t have the best reputation. Both Squawkabilly and itssurprisingly strong fellowPokemonScarlet and Violetbird Flamigohave fallen under scrutiny from fans who find them a bit too generic. The top comment on the parrot ancestry Reddit post says the fanmade design for Squawkabilly’s ancestor Pomparakeet is better than the design for Squawkabilly itself. Another comment says Squawkabilly looks like “a bird with hair glued on his forehead.” The creator of the ancestry tree even notes that they used Squawkabilly’s ancestors as a way to improve its design.
